I'm looking for a 5.x or maybe at most a 7.x receiver and I think I'd be fine with an older, used model but I'm wondering if there's any "must have" receiver features I should know about. I'm not into gaming or sports and 95+% of my use is streaming platforms which I access via an Apple TV 4k. I don't have any speakers yet but the space is roughing 20' x 15'.

Do I need any of the following:

  • HDMI 2.1
  • eARC
  • What do I need to look for in a receiver so that I can stream rear surround speakers wirelessly?

I've taken a look at the product recommendations page at link below but I can't imagine anything more than a 7.x at the most and most of the models would be overkill for me. I've been trolling Marketplace for Denon models.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

I'm running a PS5 to a Sony STR-DH770 receiver to a Sony X90K tv. I have HDMI2.1 cables connecting everything through eArc/Arc. I haven't had any issues over the last 12 months with audio cutting out, but suddenly in the past week I have had issues with a Kino Lorber 4k Blu Ray (Escape from Alcatraz) and an Arrow Video 4k Blu Ray (Blackhat) dropping audio at random moments. I also watched the Titanic 4k in between watching both of those and that had zero issues. When the audio cuts out on the 4Ks I rewind it a bit and the sound returns. Any idea if this is just the discs themselves or some other issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Original Title: Need help connecting slightly old projector to very old receiver. Sony receiver from 1990s has only RCA inputs for sound. Using ChromeCast on Acer projector from 2015 (see pic). RCA cable does not deliver sound using all combos of ports.

Replacing my soundbar with a full surround sound setup... Haven't settled on which speakers to purchase yet. I am struggling with the center channel location. There's only about 3" between the top of the media center and the bottom of the 85" television, which itself is about 24" off the ground (viewer eye position roughly center of screen).

Do I move the television up another 4" to make room for a larger center speaker (thinking KEF Q250C), jam the center channel into the media center top shelf, or just mount the center above the television?

Thx!

I know DPL II can sort of be forced but it wouldn't really auto switch (unless it's one of the few games with Dolby Digital) since I'm dealing with PS2 games here (running through optical yes)

Hi, does anyone know much about the 7001s? Trying to compare the two for a rear speaker setup but can't find much about them anywhere. Cheers.

I have been reading about the mid range compensation issues with Denon and using the room calibration app. Does this issue also apply to Onkyo AVR’s? I have an Onkyo NR5100

Focal refreshed their Aria line at CES 2024. Calling it Aria X.

Aria Evo X N°1 – $2,398 / 1500€ pair

Aria Evo X N°2 – $4,798 / 3400€ pair

Aria Evo X N°3 – $5,198 / 4000€ pair

Aria Evo X N°4 – $5,998 / 4600€ pair

Aria Evo X Center – $999 / 800€ each

I've been considering a system built around KEF R Meta's. Curious how the group thinks the new Arias will compare to the KEF’s, at least on paper? They're supposedly shipping to dealers now.

I recently bought a BK Elec sub, an x1700h, and now I'm turning my eyes to some speakers. I don't know whether I should go straight to getting all five, maybe just front three, or maybe just LR?! Like subs, I can also see varying prices depending on geographical location, so getting ones that provide best bang-for-buck (pound..?) would be great.

If it helps (it probably does), I guess usage is 60% films, 25% TV, 15% games (PS5)

Currently have a 3.1 setup with a pair of Polk Monitor 70 ii, a Polk XT35 slim center and a Polk psw 10 hooked up to a Denon X1700H that I've cobbled together the last 12 years. Enjoyed a pretty even mix of movies and music over the years. I recently upgraded to a 77inch Sony A80L from a 50 inch 12 year old Panasonic plasma and that was a huge upgrade. Now I feel like the sound is letting the visuals down especially in the mids and clarity. Would a pair of ELAC Debut 2.0 F6.2 be a side grade? Opinions or suggestions on getting a decent upgrade for general usage?

If you could choose anything and have room for anything, what would be the best way to play media in your home theater?

A computer powering your projector?

Or only a NAS? Or only a nvidia shield or...?

And if it's a shield or so... How do you get movies onto the shield?

Do you download movies, put them on a hard drive, set up a plex server and then play the movies through plex on your nvidia shield? Is that how it works? Is that the best?

My Ps5 isn't displaying 4k at 120Hz, at best it will do 1080p at 120Hz or 4k at 60Hz; I had thought it was the HDMI cable, so I bought a cable that is capable of doing 4k 120Hz/ 8k 60Hz after even the cable didn't work, I started fidgeting around with the TV setting and PS settings. How do I make my ps5 display a 4k image with 120Hz?

(The display I use is a Sony X85K and the HDMI is a 10ft PowerA cable)

Hi everyone,

Thanks to the great info on here and a few private messages, I've picked up the following gear to start with an initial 5.0 set up:

  • Sony X90L 75" Television
  • Denon S760H
  • Paradigm Monitor SE Atom Bookshelfs + 2000C (L/R/C)
  • Mission LX1 Bookshelfs (Surrounds)
  • PS5 + (older) Gaming PC

Due to budget constraints I'll be picking up sub at a later date, and eventually hope to be able to add 2X Atmos in ceiling speakers to go 5.1.2.

Please see the attached images and floor plan of the room. Disregard the mess, this has been a work in progress.

The TV is hung on an outside wall, and the wall behind the sofa is an inside wall.

Questions:

  1. Would speaker stands make the most sense for all 4 Bookshelf speakers, or do people sit them on shelves hung on the wall?

  2. How is the speaker placement I planned on the floor plan for the room?

  3. I initially had the TV Hung behind where the SOFA is now, however I changed it up because I thought it made more sense for where I have my computer desk. Any other layout suggestions? It isn't that much work to move the TV + TV Console.

  4. Any problem with putting my AVR in my IKEA Console? I would take the middle door off and leave it opened. Otherwise it would fit on top left or right of the center speaker.

  5. Subwoofer recomendations that would be a good match to my gear?

  6. Any other tips or considerations before I start? Any major oversights that I can correct now before I go any further?

Thanks again for all your help!
