So, my (25F) boyfriend (26M) has been working really hard to save up for a new GPU. for the last year, he's been really excited about upgrading his current rig and saying that he could just get a new one now but he's going to hold out and wait for the new 5000 series from nvidia. But he's become really distant and quiet the last day or so, and I don't know what's wrong. He's been muttering things like "might as well just get an AMD" and the other day I caught him researching how much half a liver sells for and how long it takes to regenerate.

The only time i've gotten him to talk in the last couple of days, he just went off on a rant about something called DLSS and "future proofing" and then he stared moodily out the window for the rest of dinner. please help i don't know why he's suddenly become like this can anybody explain? I just want my attentive and caring boyfriend back

I feel like we’re in a dark age when it comes to competitive FPS games. Remember back in the day when we could spend hours, grinding out matches, genuinely enjoying the experience? Now it’s like all these new FPS games miss the mark in one way or another. As someone who grew up playing CoD4 Promod, the state of modern shooters just frustrates me.

1. Movement Feels Clunky: One of the things I loved about CoD4 Promod was the movement. It was fast, fluid, and rewarded skill. You could master strafing, bounces, tricks, nades, smokes and position yourself cleverly to outplay your opponents. Nowadays, movement mechanics in games feel stiff, uninspired, or overly complicated for the sake of "realism." Where’s the flow?
2. Gameplay Lacks Depth: Competitive FPS games today seem obsessed with adding bells and whistles (battle passes, endless skins, convoluted ranking systems), but forget what truly matters: core gameplay. Games like Promod stripped everything down to the essentials, and it worked because the skill ceiling was high. The game didn’t hold your hand. You had to master the mechanics to be good. Modern shooters often make gameplay more accessible but end up watering down the experience for serious players.
3. Performance Issues Everywhere: Maybe I’m nostalgic, but CoD4 Promod ran smoothly on most systems, letting you focus on gameplay rather than performance problems. These days, new FPS titles seem to ship with poor optimization, lag, stuttering, and constant updates that break the game more than they fix it. No matter how good a game could be, I’m not sticking around if I have to deal with 90 FPS on a rig that should be pushing 300.
4. Where’s the Longevity?: CoD4 Promod was a game that you could grind for hours—every day, every week—and it never got old. Why? Because every match felt like a test of skill, every play was satisfying, and every victory was earned. Newer games? They’re often designed to hook you with dopamine bursts (rewards, unlocks, etc.) rather than to keep you invested because of the competitive challenge. It feels like I'm being manipulated to play rather than genuinely wanting to.
5. Fantasy Abilities and Gimmicky Utility: Another thing that frustrates me with a lot of modern FPS games is this obsession with fantasy abilities and gimmicky utilities. These days, every other game feels like it’s trying to be a mix of an FPS and an RPG. You have characters with magical barriers, teleportation abilities, or drone swarms, and while that might be fun for casual play, it takes away from the pure gun skill that competitive FPS games used to be about. In Promod, you won fights because of your aim, positioning, and timing, not because you had some overpowered ability or gadget that gave you a cheap advantage. Nowadays, games seem more interested in giving every character some flashy ability than letting the core mechanics shine.

I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but it seems like developers are missing what made games like CoD4 Promod special. We need tight mechanics, fluid & fast movement, and games that focus on the actual competitive experience rather than gimmicks and monetization schemes. I want a game that I can actually sit down and grind for hours—not because I’m chasing some shiny cosmetic, but because the gameplay itself is rewarding.

Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I just stuck in the past?

I was going to look for some information tieing DLSS to AI as someone thought DLSS was just an app and not AI at all (it stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling fyi), but I went to Nvidia's main page, just nvidia.com to see where it had AI as a bullet point for DLSS.....

I had to scroll 6 sections deep JUST to find the "Gaming and Creating" section. Everything else was AI this, AI that, maps with AI, Developing with AI, Mark Zuck uses AI, Weather with AI, pretty much everything AI with one single section for video cards, and half of it was games using RT, and the other half was only the RTX branding, not actual video cards like the 4090 or 4070ti. It did have a quick link to 'Graphics Cards' but that's it. Nowhere on the main page was anything about a specific model, flagship, budget, or otherwise. Jensen has stated they are no longer a video graphics card company in the past but I thought it was just all hype for AI, but damn... Now I am starting to realize it could actually be a possibility that they could just straight up exit the graphics market at some point in the near future....

So I went to AMD's website. Of course if you go to https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/desktops/radeon.html you get a bunch of info on video cards just like if you went to https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/ but.... On AMD's main page it was literally the same as Nvidias... Nothing but AI with one small section saying "Breakthrough Performance AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards" which is just a clickable link on an image of a boxed 7xxx series card.

That's it.. I mean.. This is worry-some. Yeah Nvidia will ALWAYS be there for the professional/high buck market, and AMD stated they are going to concentrate on the low buck market, but damn.. AI has basically taken over everyone's vision at both companies it seems.

Is this sub thread clickbait? I know you gotta be asking yourself that... I'm not posting this as such but I sure as hell hope myself it is. It would suck if we get left in the dust more than we already are and end up having only Intel as a game in town or something... I mean... I already feel like Nvidia is paying AAA studios or giving chunks of money for development of games in favor of screwing over gamers who don't buy video cards every other gen. You have games coming out that you damn near have to mod for it to work on older video cards that were meant for more than good 1080p gaming.. What the hell happened? AI, DLSS, and UE5 happened... But this is just insane.

The game is called Biohazard: Siberia, first person filled with action, blood, shooting and a villains that follow the story. I don't want to spoil it, so I won't say much..I like it, even though I played it 200 times.. This is the link to the Steam page with the demo

Acrylic is way more durable than tempered glass. You'd have to be intentionally trying to be able to destroy it like how tempered glass side panels casually get destroyed. I've searched about this topic before making this post and apparently the only pros tempered glass has over acrylic is that tempered glass looks better and is more resistant to scratches. Isn't being unbreakable better than being unscratchable?

I put together a 7600X+4070ti super for my girlfriend yesterday, I fucked up and didn’t just fork over the $430 to Amazon before it went OOS. Watched some benchmarks, read some Reddit, decided to take the 7600X deal. I figured it’d still blow mine (been using for coming up on a year) out of the water. It’s getting good frames in everything and can crank settings/RT, but I am learning what a 1% low even is I’m assuming.

You can absolutely feel the difference when your rig isn’t being powered by Supreme Overlord, 7800X3D. There’s benchmark videos and watching the frames counter, yeah, it seems silly to pay double for 10-20 extra FPS. I question my own decision at times. But it’s the smoothness at which it delivers that makes it worth and such a premium experience.

I’m not nerdy enough to understand but the X3D is fuckin magical, get you one for your next build. I see the “Skimp on CPU in favor of GPU” like your grandparents telling you how easy it is to buy a house now. Not in 2024, old man.

In an article made by hardwareluxx about MSI's Shenzen factory tour which can be found right here there are several slides where you can see unnanounced 16 core and 8 core 3D chips from AMD and their respective performance gains over Zen 5 and Zen 4 3D chips. There are more slides including 285K performance metrics and MSI's unlimited performance metrics as well which you can find in the article.

That's an average of 5% increase with an outlier showing more. I'd get those Zen4 3D chips while they last tbh.
