Resist: It's Time

We are still in this together, but "this" is going to be real different in the very near future. This demands a different kind of "we."

The French Resistance during Nazi occupation played important roles delivering downed Allied airmen back to safety, supplying military intelligence, and acts of sabotage.

The Underground Railroad is estimated to have brought 100,000 freedom seekers to safety between 1810 and 1850.

It's time.

For those serious about organizing and sharing important sensitive information, e.g. you're a government whistleblower, you're sharing information with free press outlets, etc., it's important to communicate securely. The best (and probably easiest) way is to use a live bootable OS that leaves no trace. TailsOS can be written to a USB flash drive and run on any computer after rebooting. I linked to a get started guide.

I hope this helps! Every little bit helps!

Protest tips [9 images] (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

ID:

1 Illustration of a person standing with their arms crossed, around them are the following items: a beanie, a sweatshirt, an open rucksack, a folded bandana, some power snacks, and a bottle of water with an ACAB sticker on it. Above it is text:

COME PREPARED:

Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in, running shoes, and layers for the weather. Bring water, an energy bar, and a bandana in case of surveillance.

2 Illustration of 3 people walking in a row , two have their arms linked, a third is carrying a "FTP" sign. Above it is text:

ROLL WITH A CREW:

We roll together in "affinity groups." Before the march, share your contact info, legal and medical issues, and what to do in case of arrest. Have each other's back in the streets. Leave together.

3 An illustration of a birds eye view of a protest march. Above it is text:

TAKE THE STREETS, STAY TOGETHER:

The streets are our voice. Pigs will work to split us apart, force us onto the sidewalk, kettle us, and snatch people. Stay tight so they can't grab stragglers, regroup if we get divided, and take as many lanes as possible.

4 An illustration of a protest going down a city street, instead of continuing forward towards a police blockade, they are turning down a side street. Above it is text:

QUICK AT THE CORNERS:

Pigs use intersections to split the march and push us onto the sidewalk. Move fast to get ahead of their lines, flow around or push through them to stay in the street.

5 Illustration of two cops arresting a protestor. A person off screen shouts "WHAT'S YOUR NAME?? ", the person being arrested replies "MY NAME IS ..." the person off screen replies "YOUR DATE OF BIRTH". Above it is text:

GET FREE OR GET MOVING:

If someone is arrested, don't linger too long or pigs will kettle the march. Free the comrade, or else get their name and birthdate for jail support and keep it moving.

6 An illustration of a line of cops and a squad car, in front of them are a turned over bin and newspaper dispenser blocking the road. Above it is text:

BARRICADE THE BACK:

Drag objects into the street behind the march, to break up vehicles or lines of cops following us. These light blockades will also slow traffic and help shut it down.

7 An illustration of a birds eye view of a road with cars and people walking between them, there are police cars on the side road trying to get through. Above it is text:

WITH AND AGAINST TRAFFIC:

We march with traffic in order to keep the march together, and against traffic when we need to lose vehicles or lines of cops that are tailing us.

8 Several illustrations of activities and objects: there is a person jumping a turnstile, a person throwing a smoke bomb, two people carrying a large garbage bin, and a person bent over revealing their butt. There is also a can of spray paint, an umbrella, a doughnut, a large bike lock, and a laser pointer. In the corner is the approving Drake meme. Above them is text:

DIVERSITY OF TACTICS:

Everyone is free to support the cause as they see fit. We don't police each other's actions, or snitch on each other to pigs or the media. At the same time, we take care not to endanger others with our actions.

9 An illustration of a row of people standing in front of a house, joining hands. In the tree that is in the front yard there are signs: "no cop zone", "FTP", and "no eviction!". Above it is text:

SUPPORT THOSE DIRECTLY AFFECTED: We support the leadership of people who are directly affected by the issue at hand. Those of us with different privileges shoulder risks and burdens when others can't. Talk to people you are struggling with. The stronger our relationships, the stronger the movement and less cooptable it is.

HOLD UP! CAREFUL! The download size has been marked at 68.00GB, and the actual download size just changed to 30.7GB. I had started downloading, saw it said 68GB, went on with my browsing while it ran. My browser screen just flickered, I saw a bigger sliver of "done" than I though was possible, and now it's 30.7GB. Restarting from the linked page, same thing.

So they've changed the file that was previously there. No idea why. Somehow malicious? Maybe? Realized that they uploaded something they hadn't intended to?

Critics accuse the company of wielding outsized private influence on public policing.

And and -- Knowing as much as you can about how police are trained may be very useful.

from @MidnightMan

If you have been wondering what you can do make a meaningful difference, then I may have an answer for you. Urgent action is required to prepare the people of the United States for a fascist government to come into power, and by extension the increasingly likely prospect of a genocide, but I can’t do it alone.

If you are a knowledge addict, data miner, proficient writer, or an otherwise gifted individual, then this may be your calling. We’re going to be doing and learning a lot of cool stuff, but the work is tedious, and it will aid you immensely to be driven either out of passion for learning and personal growth, love of labor, or sheer love for your fellow compatriots. Several self-maintained application servers are being run to assist with operations and collaboration.

If you’re curious or want to learn more, you can contact me at [email protected] with a new email for increased compartmentaliation, after which you will receive a reply from my primary email. Our activities are strictly legal, but anonymity on your part is strongly encouraged as a precaution to retaliatory action. Interested parties should not respond to this message over Lemmy.

#####################################################################################

The above message is likely an attempt to collect email addresses of people who might be well meaning. I would strongly advise against communicating with this person for the below reasons.

You cannot encrypt email End to End. It has to be stored in plaintext somewhere.

Yahoo does not offer encrypted email.

You have no idea of who will be emailing you back so there will be no way in which to validate your comms.

If you're looking to organize you can follow the advice below

For those interested in building networks and organizing folks to get together that’s even better. However it carries some risk so if you’re organizing use E2E comms and if you’re researching use Tor Browser. Better yet use a Tails USB on a coffee shop wifi.

https://www.tomsguide.com/how-to/how-to-use-signal

https://www.torproject.org/download/

https://tails.net/doc/first_steps/index.en.html

And don’t communicate over email, even encrypted email. Email needs to be stored and archived for it to work, often in plaintext so it’s never going to be a secure way to communicate.

For a place to start looking for aid and assistance. If there’s a fridge or book or tool share that’s not there, notify them please so they can update the site.

https://mutualaidhub.org/

If you’re looking for a place to help, look up Food Not Bombs plus whatever city is closest to you.

http://foodnotbombs.net/new_site/volunteer.php

I understand it’s an http site. Don’t sign up for anything that doesn’t pass your vibe check.

If you’d like to help undo all these info purges there’s

https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/ArchiveTeam_Warrior

Most of all, talk to loved ones, build community. We keep us safe. If you’re interested you could start a patrol and disrupt ICE stakeouts.

It’s a marathon not a sprint. Sometimes it’s as easy as doing the dishes. Mutual aid helps your neighbors and helps you.

Self care and avoiding burnout is most important. They want us harried and worried and feeling like there’s nothing we can do. Fuck that

This group seems sus. Prove me wrong.

This is not an endorsement of this group.

Just the opposite. Posting this now before I do a deep dive on who and what this group is about. Will update later.

Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos is the guy behind this. A 2017 article tells a very amazing story of this uber-successful adventurer entreprenuer.

Curiously, Radical Artist's Agency out of Arvado, CO, has a short resume for a "Carlos Alvarez-Aranyos".

The posted site makes it sound like this American Opposition place was behind the Feb 5 protests ... but that was 50501, right?

Interestingly, r/50501 seems on board, but without any mod commentary there.

An "unannounced demonstration" by Nazis ends when upstanding citizens push past police, steal a Nazi flag, and set it on fire. The Nazis leave, and the resisters are not arrested.

These people were just going about their day, and it was important to enough people to stop and get directly involved. They took on risks of bodily harm and arrest. I'm willing to bet that none of them were "prepared" for the confrontation.

37

Not everyone can, or needs to, be on the front lines and in the trenches shooting CEOs and blowing up pipelines, there are many other ways to help and organise which are essential not only to the resistance, but as building blocks for a better future

ID:

1 Title image says "How to resist an oligarchy" and has a drawing of 5 smiling people holding up their arms in a welcoming gesture

2 There are photos of trump, musk, zuc, and bezos next to text:

"Oligarchy:

a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution."

Their Goal:

For us to be overwhelmed, to ignore/avoid the growing information, and to feel helpless.

Our Goal:

Learn and focus on what we CAN do instead of why we can't."

3 text in a stylised frame says:

"Note: These suggestions are nothing new and may have to adapt to any environmental, governmental, and social changes that occur."

4 Drawing of a person holding a trey of freshly baked cookies, next to them is text:

"QUIET SUBVERSIVE:

If your calling is hiding ppl, driving women to clinics, mailing BC, or any illegal morally good activity, be paranoid.

Social media is not your friend. Zuck, Blue Sky, etc. will sell you out.

In order to be a Jane, you have to assume your life, lives of your Family/friends, and lives of the ones you are helping are in mortal danger.

As soon as you blast, "I'll hide Ann in my attic," you are no longer safe and not useful for this kind of work."

5 Drawing of a person handing out pamphlets to others, next to them is text:

"DISTRIBUTER:

This can be done by printing info. or providing online links.

For groups and orgs that can take the heat, such as Planned Parenthood, sharing and boosting their posts can be helpful.

If your calling is to print up red cards/make pamphlets, then anywhere you place this info is going to be targeted for destruction of materials.

Regularly drop off info and find new ways to get the word out. For smaller groups that need to stay somewhat obscure, be selective about sharing info."

6 There are 3 photos from mass demonstrations, between them is text:

"MARCHER:

Marches can be used for paying attention to which groups are attending.

Any group showing up with a banner is putting a giant target on themselves and they are going to need support. Volunteering with, or sending money helps them to continue showing up.

The focus of a march is disruption which can potentially lead to becoming a target.

Don't bring your phone. Don't share faces. Bring water and medical supplies.

Be prepared to be pepper sprayed, smoke bombed, hit by a baton, harassed if your face is passed around among fascists, and/or arrested/imprisoned."

7 Drawing of a person in camo, a paramedic, and a person adjusting their glasses, next to them is text:

"EDUCATOR:

These come in many forms: building, first aid, critical thinking, self defense, fact checking, science, map reading, psychology etc.

Anything that can help the quiet subversive, the information distributer, the marcher etc. etc. be more effective; keep up the good work of long threads and videos.

If you are not an expert, share media and videos from credible experts."

8 Drawing of a table with food on it, there are 3 people in line holding plates and 2 more serving up the food, above it is text:

"VOLUNTEER:

Soup kitchens, shelters, anywhere and everywhere people or animals are in need. Any and all good works towards our neighbors is resistance."

9 Drawing of a person curled up looking cosy, holding a pen and pad. There is also an image of the relevant book cover to the text beside it:

"REST:

Rest can be resistance.

From what I understand, it is about self care for the long haul.

For more information, I recommend reading "Rest is Resistance" by Tricia Hersey

CREATE:

Paint, write, draw, graffiti, design, music, videos, comedy.

If you are a creative person, use it to spread awareness, help raise funds, etc."

10 3 photos of places of worship, beside them is text:

"CHURCH GOER:

Historically, churches/synagogues/ mosques/temples have been a safe-ish place to gather in large groups and organize.

Anyone familiar with the history of black churches, or churches under Fascism, know there is potential for great good but also a risk of the church being burned, raided, bombed, or leaders being rounded up.

Whether you are a theist or atheist, consider finding a community that can gather and organize in large groups and become a regular contributing member.

As of 1/22/2024 ICE is legally allowed to raid churches, hospitals, and schools under illegal immigrant suspicion. They need a JUDGE ISSUED WARRANT. YOU ARE legally allowed to look at it and demand it.

11 Drawing of a person behind a stall, a photo of a large group of people behind a Planned Parenthood banner, and an illustrated banner for The Trevor Project. Between them is text:

"FINANCIAL SUPPORTER:

Every dollar has a potential to do good.

If you are able to put money towards a small business, especially if they are run by marginalized persons or groups, please do.

The billionaires won't be hurt and it won't stop them from aligning with Fascists but it will put money into hands of those needing to escape, needing aid, or in the hands of the above mentioned resisters."

What are simple things you are doing to help yourself and your neighbors right now? (US)

A lot of people are overwhelmed, and that is the point of the rapid fire changes we are seeing. Small actions can make a difference, and can grow into big impacts.

I live in a deeply red state, so a lot of my peers have to battle some cognitive dissonance before we can acknowledge there is a problem, much less begin to pin down actions that may help. So, I'm focusing on teaching my social circle on the tech basics. I have taken these things for grated, but I am finding many people do not use them. Plus, they don't have to battle their cognitive dissonance with me in order to make these changes. Changes that will make everyone on the Internet safer and ensure we have information access to stay informed.

  • Install a VPN - talking about it helps to normalize this. It doesn't mean "I have something to hide" it means "I need to protect my privacy in an ever increasingly online world". It means "I need to make sure my banking passwords stay secure." If it is normalized for everyday use, then when somebody needs it to obscure their search for critical healthcare information that is now censored in their country or area, their VPN usage alone doesn't give them away.

  • Install a password manager - this one is best practice anyway, and good advice across the board. These things do not need to be equated with being a hacker.

  • Establish secure lines of messaging - I recommend signal to people. This one has a high social cost, but you may be able to point out that normal text group chats often drop messages when the group has mixed apple and android users. YMMV and this one is a harder one for many people. I don't push it too hard. I do censor myself on unencrypted messaging. If you want all the memes, you can join me on encrypted chat! Lol

  • Secure chat doesn't have to be signal if you're on android, and you message others on android, note if you have the encryption lock or not. If not, encourage them to look in their settings for RCS messages and make sure they have encryption turned on.

Also, start small. And teach small. Plant the seed. Help get people set up where you can. If people as for your advice, think about suggestions that are easy to implement, even if they aren't perfect. Encourage others to do what they can. You don't need to self-host your own cloud server to take steps in the right direction and be a little safer online. We just need to slow them down.

39

I have no idea if any of this is useful to anyone but figured I'd share what resources I find.

40

41

Just so everyone knows where he is more precisely. Wouldn't want him to get lost.

Over/under on whether there will be clashes in the parking lot?

42

If you have some spare bandwidth, and a little compute, this is a way that you can help Internet Archive. There are a number of different "projects" to focus on, including "US Government."

Make sure to check all the FAQ stuff there, especially "Can I use whatever internet ..., because you should not be using a VPN, or public internet, or TOR, or a few other things. Because of that, this won't be for everyone, but I'm sure there are some who could help keep things from going in the memory hole.

Our democracy is at immediate risk, and history is repeating itself. What Donald Trump and Elon Musk are doing mirrors the actions of past authoritarian regimes. It took just 53 days for Hitler to dismantle Germany’s democracy. 53 days. He used executive orders, erased marginalized groups, and silenced opposition—while too many stood by and did nothing.

Trump’s executive order erases transgender and intersex people from legal recognition—just like Hitler erased Jewish and trans people from legal records before persecution began.

Elon Musk now has access to the U.S. Treasury’s financial system—just like Putin’s oligarchs seized control of Russia’s wealth to consolidate power.

Trump is erasing vital medical information from our government and silencing opposition—just like Hitler suppressed science and banned opposing views.

Trump is dismantling government agencies, firing oversight officials, and gutting institutions like USAID and the Department of Education—just like Hitler replaced government officials with loyalists to eliminate accountability.

We are on day 15, and we are running out of time. We have to make change, or our democracy will be gone.

We the people are speaking out at every capital in every state, today, now!

A growing movement opposing President Donald Trump's early actions is organizing protests across all 50 states on Wednesday.

What to Know:

The movement uses the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501 (50 protests, 50 states, one day).

Many demonstrations are planned at state capitols, while others will take place in major cities.

Flyers circulating online denounce Project 2025 and call for action against fascism and deportations.

Organizers, like Kelsey Brianne in Michigan, are mobilizing communities with grassroots efforts.

Protests have already begun, with thousands marching against deportation policies in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The movement has a website at 50501movement.carrd.co and is active on Instagram, Reddit, Bluesky, Discord and Signal.

There's a protest planned for today near you. If you'd like to attend below is a bit of info.

Some more media mentions, mostly local and brief:

What I mean by "gatekeeping resistance" is commentary along the lines of "that suggestion is useless, you have to do what I think you should do," or "that just makes you feel better, it has no effect."

Why we're not going to do that here is because resistance is better with all efforts, great and small, from all kinds of people. While any individual bit of small resistance is unlikely to have a great impact all by itself, the cumulative effects of many over time can. Those effects are about gumming up the cogs of fascism in action, but they're also about giving some hope to the quiet bystanders who need to keep their heads down right now.

As always, we're in this for the long haul. Nothing is going to "get back to normal" any time soon, and even when it does, that "normal" isn't going to look anything like what we're accustomed to. We're all finding our way, and if that means doing very small things today to get into a new mindset, so be it. And of course, if you've done something "large," you shouldn't be talking about it here anyway. If it gets into the news, then get someone to post an article about it. Maybe that will mean this place appears a bit milquetoast on the surface. Fine. Let it be the tip of the iceberg.

Last note - I have not "strongly moderated" here, and I have no plans to. When I have something to say "as a moderator," I put on the "ModeratorHat". I'll continue to do so. Whether that hat is on or off, disagreement is welcome and encouraged, and disagreement is never a "punishable offense." "Being a dick about it" might be, but not the disagreement itself.

Have fun storming the castle!

Not sure how to approach this so I'll just spew some thoughts.

Is there anything morally or legally wrong with taking pictures of MAGA-flag waving homes, looking the owners up on the local tax site and posting that information online? Pic, name, address, nothing else.

To my thoughts, they're proudly waving a flag promoting their beliefs. Could they legally complain for spreading that information? Isn't that the very purpose of a flag? Is it even doxxing when they proudly fly their flags? This isn't some person wishing to remain anonymous.

I'm certain lemmy would shut such a community down, in a New York minute, but why? If there are no calls for violence or harassment, why not help them spread their message?

Could such a site be deployed, perhaps outside social media? Zero chance of making such a site untraceable?

Got to nearly shaking in anger the other night as my legal, brown wife expressed her terror of being deported. Filipino FB is full of rumors and fear, and it seems mostly that, rumors. But we all know this administration won't stop with illegals.

I'm scared shitless, she's scared shitless, can we make the supporters scared shitless? And again, they're flying a flag, advertising to the world how they feel. Why should that make them afraid? And if they are, what can they do about it?

I'm assuming this post was made by an American, and laws might vary where you are, but the point remains the same in every country: the cops are there to serve the state, not you, and they will not hesitate for a second to lie to you and pretend to be on your side to get what they need.

Don't trust them, don't believe them, don't confide in them, don't make their job of oppressing the working class easier.
