I guess I'm not as surprised as I thought I was. Best decision for the club right now. Even if Bo ends up reinjuring the knee or has another injury that sets him back for a week or two, Davis has shown he's capable of filling in in the middle infield defensively at the very least, as well as him just hitting way better than DeJong at the moment. DeJong isn't really giving us anything we don't already have.
In 13 games, DeJong went 3/44 (.068; all singles) with 18 strikeouts. He was a black hole on offence, on a team where we have a very well-known inability to score runs crisis at the moment. With numbers like that, I don't think there's any need to speculate about reasons for being let go beside performance, unfortunately. I think his firing may have been in part to send a message to the clubhouse and appease fans (i.e., "we expect to see results"). The optics of a team trading for a veteran player at the deadline and then DFA-ing him 13 games later isn't great. Besides David Schneider, Espinal could have been sent down as an alternative for DFA-ing DeJong. I feel bad for DeJong - maybe he'll get picked up by another team - however, like @imasnyper said, I think this might be the best move for the team, because Schneider, Biggio, and Espy could all play SS if Bo were to go down. One thing Bo's injury might have taught us though is that if he were to get injured again this year, that'd likely be a death blow to our odds of getting into the playoffs
