I can see your point about the housing crisis in a way. It restricts people's ability to have a place to live and, shelter. But does that really affect their freedom? Cost of living also is difficult but it's not really preventing you from being "free" in the sense of the word. Or is it? I may be missing the point.

I'm completely ignorant to policing issues, especially in Vancouver. I generally don't agree with law enforcement having too much control.

In my region of BC the reconciliation stuff has been very well received mostly. Indigenous people are a big part of the community and their culture has expanded into the school system, their businesses are successful. Housing projects for indigenous have also been going on constantly.

Why do you think so?

How do you find frigate with the NUC? It works pretty well?

I have a Synology DS923+ as my NAS which currently runs Plex, Immich and a couple other things.

I also have a Intel NUC (8th gen) which has Proxmox on it which mainly does PiHole and HomePage. I would like to use the NUC for PiHole, Immich, Plex, HomePage and Home Assistant.

Is Proxmox the best system to use for these applications? Would it be easier to just install Debian and Docker and run everything through containers on one OS instead of splitting them all up into LXC or VMs?

I would also like the convenience of easily updating containers through a GUI. I am not afraid of SSH and CLI but it's nice to go to a browser address and see everything in one place. Kind of like how DSM7 is set up on Synology.

Is the only thing that's going to fix the housing crisis actually reducing the cost of homes? And nobody actually wants that to happen.. so...

I have been using crypto since 2017, made plenty of dumb trades which caused me to lose out a lot. Currently my portfolio is about 80% BTC and while the new USA admin seems they may do more damage than good to the crypto space I'm still positive about Bitcoin.

This sub seems like a meme or anti-btc sub mostly. Anybody here who isn't that way?

I don't know all the facts but maybe if more people.votrd in the first place Donald wouldn't have won? Maybe not.. But Americans should be pushing back and they haven't done anything yet but complain online. Pushing any single one of them to take action is better than only attempting to punish the ones who don't even care.

Yeah depending on what OP wants to do with the machines. I've been gaming on Linux for over a year now on my desktop and haven't had any issues. Especially since they're using AMD cards.

Yeah I agree. I'm trying to be optimistic about whoever we have next isn't going to sell us out or pull a USA. PP doesn't instill much confidence but I just hope he has some heart or desire to do good and not be evil.

Not that I support PP (also I hate that I need to specify that first) but he's got a couple videos on YouTube that I thought were fairly well done addressing a couple things regarding trade and some plans.

Thanks a lot for Immich and for posting here. Much appreciated the hard work this year and helping myself and family on our self hosted journey.

Performance mostly, encoding is better, reducing load on my NAS and using it specifically for storage. Immich performs better as well, it's pretty resource hungry I found. I also am planning to set up Frigate for home security and that's the main reason I wanted something with a bit more power.

My wife bought some Govee Smart LED string lights. We have VLANs setup in our house to isolate IoT devices and setup the new lights on that WiFi. But when we use the app to control them it requires an account and precise and "while using app" location data. The app does not work at all without enabling permissions for location.

Am I being paranoid? This wasn't an initial setup thing the app is unusable without location enabled.

She really wants smart LED lights for outside the house. Is there an option anyone knows of that might be a bit more privacy oriented?

Thanks.

My first time building any sort of furniture. I'm a journeyman redseal carpenter in Canada and spent my career building houses for 15 years and recently started a new job where I have access to a shop and some better tools.

It would be a nice feature to be able to select which installed browser jerboa defaults to opening external links in.

I have sonarr, radarr, gluetun and qbittorrent with overseer allowing my family to request movies and automatically download. I only have public indexers in prowlarr (1337x, kickass torrents, etc.)

This NAS also has a lot of important data like photos and documents.

I am used to vetting my torrents pretty thoroughly before downloading but now it's all automatic.

What level of risk am I running with my data when downloading things in this manner? Is there a chance of malware getting onto my NAS? Ransomware? Is the risk pretty minimal?

“Dry conditions are not new to the Special Areas, but ongoing moisture deficiencies and hot temperatures have devastated crops and pasture throughout the region. Producers are struggling to find enough grass, water, and feed for their cattle. Farmers are facing widespread crop failures. Significant grasshopper infestations are making a very difficult situation worse in many parts of the Special Areas. Declaring an agricultural disaster is one way we can raise awareness of how serious this problem is with the province and with the federal government.” Jordon Christianson, Chair

Synology vs DIY (self.selfhosted)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Policeshootout to c/[email protected]

I currently use an old (2013?) Intel NUC with a 12TB MyBook plugged in as a simple Plex server. I want to get a NAS. Right now at Amazon or B&H I can get a DS923+ w/ two 16TB HDDS for about $1000.

My main question is if I should try to go the DIY route. Am I going to possibly regret putting all my eggs in the Synology basket? I like the DS923+ because of it's small form factor mainly. But I am sort of keen to use an open source OS like TrueNas.

My main uses are going to be Plex hosting, photo management for myself and wife and data backup. I am a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to electronics. I love messing around with things, trying new software, breaking stuff and fixing it. Are there any major restrictions I am going to experience with Synology? Thanks a bunch!

-edit- Thank you everyone for all the replies! Super helpful, Lemmy rocks :)
