Looking for some help identifying a flying insect. They are black and red flying bugs about the size of a largish wasp and have a very long, distinct "stinger" on their ass, but I don't think it's actually used to sting. I see them almost exclusively on the lawn where they are constantly flitting around, landing then taking off again after a few seconds.

Sorry I couldn't get a decent photo of them.

I've always called them Grass Wasps but I don't know if that's a name I made up (searching for that term doesn't find them). I'm pretty sure they're not actual wasps.

I'm just trying to find their actual name to look up some information on them. I'm used to seeing them around but the last couple of months their numbers have been steadily increasing in my yard to the extent where there's basically a swarm of them permanently around. They don't really do anything problematic but I was curious why they seem so populous at the moment (I assume its just the jungle weather we've been having) and if they might cause any issues in large numbers.

This was taken just after 4 am. I don't love mornings too much but at least I get to see this kind of thing on occasion.

The sun appeared between the clouds and the land but it didn't show up like that in this photo. It looks pretty cool though I reckon.

TMR put this up on their Facebook asking who has to give way, but that's too easy. A much more complicated question is: what does the law say around indicating?

I've seen people say only blue must indicate, others say both must indicate, and yet others say neither must indicate. Which is correct?
