Am I just noticing them more now? It's like every other post now is a bot. Please don't tell me that lemmy is about to be like reddit where it's only bots that post anything at all

I keep hearing about how you shouldn't laugh over your own jokes but when I watch a video or listen to a podcast, I find it much more authentic and likable when they laugh over their own jokes in a conversation. You know, vibes.

Folks, let me share some random observations with you, because I can't wrap my mind around those.

  1. People have Zoom, Teams, Slack, Discord, Messenger, Telegram, and Viber, all happily installed on their phones at the same time. When you then invite them to Matrix they are like "Is this necessary? Why install yet another one of those?"

  2. People who use Chrome by default without ad blockers, and you just hint there is a massive intelligence and surveillance operation are quick to respond that "I am getting this services for free, so it is fine to give something back" [^1].

  3. People thinking that OSS is not secure enough for their devices. Surprise surprise, it is the exact same people who fall for obvious scams and their devices are ad-ridden, bloated horrors that have not been updated in a million years, but they think that Libre Office will break their computer and lose their emails.

  4. People thinking that privacy and anonymity enthusiasts are shady freaks who want to go live in the woods and possibly terrorists. There is a slightly insane take here that we are against technology because we refuse to "just" install an app to make our lives easier[^2].

So they do not complain about being exploited and disrespected, while ripped off and offered crap services, as long it is a capitalist corporation shaking them down with vendor lock-in and network effects. They are grateful even. But just the idea of installing a single free/libre OSS app or extension to protect their privacy is a red flag and pushes their buttons big time, even for just suggesting it.

So, what are your own examples of anti-OSS stupidity, and how do you explain its prevalence in society?

[^1]: It is how quick they are in responding that way, which makes me think that the idea is already crystalized in their minds, by some "anti-OSS" discourse.

[^2]: But just installing a Matrix client is a big deal.

Instinctively, I've often felt it might, but I wonder if that's how other people think.

Some context: I have worked in TV for a long time. I tried to become an editor, it was basically my dream to be a film or TV editor. This career didn't really work out. I had one or two credits to my name, but I couldn't convince my local industry to take me seriously and I never made that short list of people here who are regularly called to do this and no one really thinks of me as an editor. I ended up pigeonholed in to a technical role which I've spent most of my career since doing in order to make a living. It has been very depressing and disheartening to watch the dream wither.

Recently there was a bit of a seachange for me. I was unexpectedly plucked from my rut and put in to a colour grading role. I knew a bit about grading and had always liked it but was definitely not at that point someone I personally would have picked because of the lack of any credits in the role, and the lack of expert level proficiency normally required to do that for Television where speed, efficiency and accuracy are very important. As it happened, I loved it and I was able to rise to the occasion just fine and it's led to other credits since. I think I might finally have the career path that I actually like and feel some self-respect having.

However, the thing is I never truly gave up on being an editor, I just didn't really succeed as I'd like to have done and have begun following this colourist path basically because it just opened up in front of me. I recently completed colour for a series and it's been commissioned for a second series. I did well at that company and both myself and my work were well received. While there I vaguely raised the subject that I also edit and would love to do that for them if they needed it. I know for the second series they're likely to call me in for colour once more, and I know that they are doubling the number of episodes this time which would mean they will need more editors than last time around so while they'll definitely call in the old crew, maybe there's a chance they might be happy for me to do that as well as the colour. The thing is, if they don't themselves think of this and ask me about it, I wonder if mentioning it myself explicitly might backfire on me. I worry that if they turn out not to be interested in having me edit, the very act of mentioning it that second time, might lower their estimation of me as a colourist. I'm worried it might give off some air of arrogance, or possibly desperation, and maybe it'll look like I didn't really want to be a colourist or I'm not really interested in it which might sour them on hiring me for that role too.

Is this a valid concern? Is it poor form to try and snag additional roles when a company knows you for another? Would it make me look like a jack of all trades and master of none?

I've had female friends and I've had male friends but for some reason I've noticed that females are more intimate and close to there friends then males are. Is this true for all male friends?

I always notice some women just have the best perfume and it really does make them more attractive just from the smell alone. I'm wondering, what do you think is the best cologne for a man? Have you ever received a compliment?

Definition of independent for the purposes of this question: source is not owned by a for-profit corporation, is not financially backed by any billionaire (either directly or via foundation or nonprofit organization) and is not financed by any national government (even if run without oversight).

It can have any perceived bias or political leaning.

Edit: Just to add it has to be written in English.

I’ve been going from app to app, some clients have a push notification setting but I’m still not getting anything when I’m outside of the app. What’s causing this? And are there apps where push notifications are working currently?

Everything named Concord crashed and burned as a result of overconfidence.

And then the Titanic and OceanGate Titan sank despite being "unsinkable".

What impact do you think it will have on you?

Are there critical items to purchase now that will be too expensive to afford next year?

Are you changing your savings or investments?

I'm ready to step away from Reddit. I know you can encounter toxic behavior on other platforms too, but I'm just exhausted by the level of negativity there. So, I have two questions for those who have fully transitioned — What prompted your decision to leave? And were you able to get others to join you on Lemmy?

If I’m in the checkout at a business, say McDonald’s or Walmart or Kroger or whatever, and they ask if I’d like to round up to donate to some charity, I usually say yes. But should I be doing this? I heard somewhere that I shouldn’t because they can claim that as a donation from them which contributes to them paying less taxes or something, I’m not sure if that’s 100% how it works but I figure that it benefits them somehow or why else would they do that?

We see them have backpacks or bags but rarely do we see what's inside. They definitely don't have clothes since they don't change into anything. Maybe food, water, ammo but they should have more. Or sometimes there packs are too light like they don't have anything

Is there any software to type exact what it sees on screen. Sort of like the old captchas, but I want to repurpose it for a single player use in a game.

I know I can't ask for help here and tipofmytongue has already been used also various chatbots so I'm kind out of options and I'm wondering if you guys know any other forums or websites to help me find a movie/short film title that a friend can't remember? They only remember some of the scenes and tone of the cinematography

(I rewrote the title seven times, I'm just going with this)

I tried Bluesky because of its growing popularity, and I'm confused about its supposedly decentralized nature. Yes, you can "own" your account with a custom domain, but everything else is centralized onto the one instance which is Bluesky - there's no federation or anything like that (?) so I don't see why people promote it as being anti-big corporation even though it may become that at this rate.

With Mastodon/ActivityPub, federated instances connect through the underlying software that they all share. Heck, you can even communicate with other software like Lemmy through the ActivityPub protocol. Sure, I guess you don't "own" your account/likes/etc, but I think it's way better than being locked in to solely one instance and not having the ability to switch if the one your using doesn't appeal to you in some way.

I'm sure I'm missing and/or an incorrect on some information about all this, so I'm really just hoping someone can explain it in a way that I understand.

I bought a new tablet but I'm unable to use the charging cable it came with until I can get an adapter because I don't have anything that can except USB type C. I have multiple cables with a USB A connector but the tablet says that it's "slow charging" when I use them. I tried to look this up before posting but for some reason, a lot of websites refer to "normal changing" as slow charging now and I'm unable to find anything relevant to my issue. Would I be fine to use the other cables I have until I can get an adapter?

Edit: I no longer need help with this. I originally made this post because, for several years, I was told and had read that both slow and fast charging damaged batteries significantly more than normal charging. But, as multiple users have stated, it seems like I was being told and reading false information and slow charging is actually better for a battery than normal charging.
