How to watch TV? (self.ontario)
submitted 1 month ago by faxed to c/ontario

I picked up an old/cheap digital TV antenna and plugged it into my TV and watching regular TV for the first time in 20+ years.

The automatic channel scan picks up 9 stations here in Toronto. I was hoping for PBS but no luck. I don't think I even have english CBC. Where is it supposed to be?

There isn't a TV guide station anymore.

So far the best thing I found is OMNI TV where I just watched the news in Tagalog (I think) and now it's on again in Arabic. On a weekend where time is happening, the English that's sprinkled in is enough to make it interesting to me.

WTF someone vandalized "fuck gaza" on a Muslim Association of Canada building in Montreal. News is perhaps suggesting people donate to https://handsforcharity.org/ 🍉

I wish this was subtitled in english to appease my anglo chauvinism.

Anyways in a general sense how do you find out what's on TV

Ontario, for example, is one of two provinces that doesn’t have a deposit-return program for bottles and cans, fewer than half of which are diverted through existing recycling programs. In Toronto, the diversion rate for multi-unit buildings such as apartments and condominiums is less than 30 per cent, for reasons that are easy to intuit for anyone who has spent any time in one. “Most buildings constructed before the last five or 10 years have a single garbage chute at the end of every floor.

Bill 10, which holds landlords criminally liable for any drug activity on their properties, became law on June 4th.

Bill 10, put forward by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, passed into law on June 4th. Subtitled the Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act, it includes a clause that would hold landlords criminally liable for any illicit drug activity on their properties. The Schedule 8 clause targets drug trafficking, but also covers any possession that might indicate an intent to sell, even if it's just a few pills or a joint.

I am old, I am new to Lemmy. Not sure if this allowed but IMO it is really important. This is from the Reddit post by user SaveDnet-FRed0. If this is not allowed downvote and I will remove. I also agree with what he has to say. He also says it better than I could anyhoo.

Titled “We can never judge Americans again if Bill 5 goes unopposed by the people of Ontario.”

“Bill 5 is going to screw us if it doesn't get some serious overhaul. We're talking a roll back of fundamental labor protections.

To name just a few sources that highlight this: https://ofl.ca/materials/submission-re-bill-5-protect-ontario-by-unleashing-our-economy-act-2025/2025-05-26-oflsubmission-bill5/

Are there also major problems with how it treats the environment and indigenous rights? Yep. But guess what won't piss off the people enough to move their collective asses: The environment and indigenous rights.

That's why they're highlighting these issues. They're hoping the noise of it will drown out things that would unite the majority of Canadians. I'm not saying they're not important. I'm saying Ford knows exactly how to play the people. Environment and Indigenous relations instantly turns this to liberal v conservative. No. Fuck that. It's a damn trap. You want to fight this bill? Highlight the thing that will piss every worker in Ontario off.

We need to move against this. We need to organize a protest that is more than just waving some signs. We need to pick a work day when these ass hats are in office and stare them down so it's actually mildly disruptive. I know that's not easy. I know that's a risk. That's the point.

If we can't do this, we need to shut the fuck up and sit down when other people mock Americans for not fixing their government. If we can't mobilize against this in a meaningful way, we are just as apathetic and ineffective.”
