The UK Defence Intelligence community believes that the killing of Russian generals could negatively affect the command structure in some units of the Russian Armed Forces.

Details: The UK intelligence reports that the recently killed Mikhail Gudkov, deputy commander of the Russian Navy, became at least the second high-ranking general to die since the beginning of the year.

In total, since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has lost at least 16 generals, as stated in the review.

"The loss of so many high-ranking officers is likely to have had the effect of undermining command and control in parts of the Russian Armed Forces. This has likely contributed to Russian tactical and operational difficulties during the conflict," UK intelligence notes.

Background:

Major General Gudkov was killed on 2 July in Kursk Oblast.Gudkov was appointed deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy at the end of March, and before that, he commanded the 155th Marine Brigade, which was involved in the executions of Ukrainian military personnel.Last week, UK intelligence pointed to the scale of unauthorised desertion from the Russian army.

The death toll from the Russian attack on Kyiv on 4 July has risen to two.

Details: It has been confirmed that a 25-year-old man died in a Kyiv hospital on 5 July after being in a critical condition following the Russian attack the day before.

Emergency workers found the body of the first dead person on Friday in a damaged non-residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district of the city.

Background: During the response to the aftermath of a large-scale Russian attack on 4 July, the body of a dead person was found in Kyiv.

US President Donald Trump has said that he was satisfied with the conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy the day before.

Details: Trump said that he and Zelenskyy "had a very good call; we’ve talked about different things".

"We had a very good call; I think it was very strategic," he added.

When asked about the supply of American weapons to Ukraine, the US president said that "we’ve been helping them and we’ll continue to help them."

"It's a pretty tough situation. We’ll see what happens," Trump said without specifics.

Later, on a separate question about the prospects of supplying Ukraine with Patriot systems, he said: "Yes, we might".

The Russians launched 322 UAVs against Ukraine on the night of 4-5 July, of which 292 were shot down.

Details: According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the main direction of the attack was the city of Starokostiantyniv in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

It is noted that 157 UAVs were shot down and another 135 disappeared from radar.

The impact of the Russian means of aerial attack in four locations and the fall of debris in six locations were recorded.

Russian troops launched a large-scale drone attack on the city of Chuhuiv in Kharkiv Oblast on the evening of 5 July, injuring 11 people, including two children.

Details: Among those who were injured are a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

As of Saturday morning, firefighters are extinguishing a large-scale fire at one of the city's facilities.

At another location, the drone struck a post office and a non-operational building. A fire broke out. Houses and cars were damaged.

In total, one person was killed and 15 were injured in the oblast on 4 July, including two children.

Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration reported that a 55-year-old woman was killed in Kupiansk, and a 61-year-old and 70-year-old woman, as well as a 56-year-old and 57-year-old man, were injured.

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Vladimir Putin does not want a ceasefire in Ukraine but rather to "keep killing people".

Details: Speaking about his conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy the day before, Trump recalled how he had spoken with the Kremlin leader earlier.

"I told you I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it’s no good," he said.

Meanwhile, the US president does not believe that Putin is "mocking" him by refusing to agree to a ceasefire.

Trump said that Putin was concerned about sanctions and added that the Senate was preparing large-scale sanctions.

Earlier, the American president admitted that during a telephone conversation with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin on Thursday, he had not made any progress on a ceasefire in Ukraine.Commenting on the conversation between the leaders of Russia and the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed doubt that they had much in common.

A total of 15 people were injured and two more were killed in Russian attacks in Donetsk and Kherson oblasts on 4 July alone.

Details: On 4 July, Russians killed two residents of Donetsk Oblast: in Kostiantynivka and Torske.

Four more people were injured in the oblast during the day – two in Pokrovsk and two in Kramatorsk.

Meanwhile, 11 people were injured in Kherson Oblast as a result of Russian aggression.

It is known that the Russian military fired on residential areas of the oblast’s settlements, damaging two high-rise buildings and 26 houses. The Russians also destroyed a gas pipeline, a petrol station, a garage and cars.

Units from the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the defence forces, have attacked the Borisoglebsk air base in Russia's Voronezh Oblast on 5 July, where Su‑34, Su‑35S and Su‑30SM aircraft are based.

A total of 183 combat clashes have occurred on the battlefield over the past day.

Details: On the North Slobozhanshchyna front and in Russia's Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled 17 Russian attacks. Russian forces conducted 13 airstrikes, dropping 32 guided bombs, and fired 290 times, including nine times from multiple-launch rocket systems.

On the South Slobozhanshchyna front, the Russians tried to break through Ukrainian defences near the settlements of Vovchansk, Hlyboke, Zelene and Kamianka and towards Kutkivka 10 times.

On the Kupiansk front, eight Russian attacks occurred. Ukrainian defenders repelled assaults near the settlements of Holubivka, Zahryzove and Zelenyi Hai.

On the Lyman front, the Russians conducted 27 attacks, trying to penetrate Ukrainian defence near the settlements of Nadiia, Hrekivka, Karpivka, Ridkodub, Zelena Dolyna, Torske and Dibrova and towards Hryhorivka.

On the Siversk front, the Russians conducted three attempts to advance near the settlements of Verkhnokamianske and Vyimka.

On the Toretsk front, the Russians conducted 11 attacks near the village of Romanivka and towards Rusyn Yar and Yablunivka.

On the Pokrovsk front, Ukraine's defence forces stopped 66 Russian assaults near the settlements of Poltavka, Novotoretske, Razine, Myroliubivka, Promin, Novoukrainka, Udachne, Novoserhiivka, Kotliarivka and Oleksiivka.

On the Novopavlivka front, the Russians conducted 17 attacks near the settlements of Yalta, Zirka, Zaporizhzhia, Komar, Voskresenka and Shevchenko.

On the Orikhiv front, the Russians conducted three unsuccessful attempts to advance on Ukrainian positions near the village of Kamianske and towards Novoandriivka.

On the Prydniprovske front, the Russians conducted three unsuccessful attempts to attack Ukrainian positions near the Antonivka bridge.

Russia has lost 1,050 soldiers killed and wounded over the past day alone, bringing its total number of personnel losses to 1,025,260.

Russian forces conducted a series of strikes on Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on the night of 4-5 July, using kamikaze drones and artillery. Four people have been injured and civilian infrastructure damaged in the attacks.

Details: Lysak said air defence forces had downed five Russian drones over the oblast.

Despite this, two women and a man have been injured in the Dniprovskyi district due to falling debris. In addition, five dachas were destroyed. [A dacha is a seasonal secondary residence, usually with a little plot of land, where people grow vegetables, fruit trees and berries or keep a garden - ed.]

Quote: "The Nikopol district suffered from drone and artillery attacks. The aggressor attacked the district centre [the city of Nikopol] as well as Myrove, Marhanets and Pokrovske hromadas. Russian forces have dropped ammunition from a UAV on a local resident in the Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The woman has been hospitalised with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds.

Explosions, fires and mobile internet disruptions have been recorded in several Russian regions after a nighttime UAV attack.

Details: Russian authorities and eyewitnesses claimed that drones had attacked several facilities in the Russian cities of Cheboksary, Engels and Saratov on the night of 4-5 July.

Busargin said drone debris had damaged residential buildings in Engels and Saratov.

Engels residents reported on social media a series of explosions near the military air base.

Drones attacked industrial business premises in Cheboksary. Videos posted on social media show a large‑scale fire. The city experienced mobile internet disruptions after the attack.

The Astra Telegram channel reported that police had blocked access to the territory of JSC VNDIR-Progres plant, which manufactures Kometa receivers for the Russians that protect Russian drones from Ukrainian electronic warfare systems.

In addition, NASA's fire‑monitoring system recorded a fire on the territory of the Borisoglebsk military air base in Voronezh Oblast.

The Ukrainian military command did not comment on the situation at the time of publication. Ukrainska Pravda is currently unable to independently verify this information.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has expressed hope that the United States will show "flexibility" regarding arms supplies to Ukraine so that Kyiv has the necessary resources for self-defence.

Quote from Rutte: "The US has to make sure that the stockpiles are at the level we need for the US to have, because they are crucial for our collective defence. At the same time, of course, we hope for the flexibility, we have to make sure also that Ukraine can move forward."

Details: Rutte stated that he understands the US administration's desire to prioritise its own interests, but he also calls for continued military support for Ukraine.

Given Russia's clear unwillingness to work towards a ceasefire, allies must be sure that Ukraine "has what it needs to stay in the fight".

Specialists from Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national power company, have restored the operation of the high-voltage transmission line supplying power to the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Details: The company noted that due to the threat, they were unable to immediately begin emergency repair works.

The plant had switched to diesel generators, which are the last resort for maintaining the operation of the plant’s critical infrastructure.

Background: On 4 July, Russian forces caused a blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by striking a transmission line connecting the plant with Ukraine’s unified power grid.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated in his evening address that Ukrainian interceptor drones shot down dozens of Shahed loitering munitions launched by Russia on Ukraine on the night of 3-4 July.

One person has been killed as a result of a Russian guided aerial bomb strike on the village of Prymorske in the Vasylivka district, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Over the past 24 hours, the Russians have carried out 377 attacks on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.Russian forces launched four airstrikes on the settlements of Huliaipole and Mali Shcherbaky. A total of 245 UAVs of various types (mostly first-person view drones) targeted the settlements of Malokaterynivka, Kanivske, Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka and Charivne. The Russians used multiple-launch rocket systems to deliver eight strikes on Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky and Mali Shcherbaky. Another 120 artillery strikes targeted Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka and Charivne.Sixteen reports were received about damage to houses, flats and cars.

US President Donald Trump has said that the US wants to help Ukraine with air defence due to the escalation of Russian attacks. Trump made the remark during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday 4 July.

Details: Sources told Axios that the Zelenskyy-Trump phone call lasted about 40 minutes and was devoted mainly to Ukraine’s air defence needs.

One source said the US president was aware of the recent escalation by Russia, particularly airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and on the front line.

"Trump said he wants to help with air defence and that he will check what was put on hold if anything," the source said.

A Ukrainian source reports that Trump and Zelenskyy agreed that representatives of the United States and Ukraine will soon meet to discuss the supply of air defence equipment and other weapons.
