The Sovetsky District Court in Chelyabinsk, Russia, has ruled to transfer a controlling stake in the Yuzhuralzoloto gold mining company, owned by billionaire Konstantin Strukov, to the state, upholding a lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Source: Dmytro Malbin, lawyer representing Yuzhuralzoloto, as reported by The Moscow Times

Details: Strukov, also the deputy speaker of the Chelyabinsk Regional Legislative Assembly, holds a 67.8% stake in Yuzhuralzoloto. Another 22% is owned by a Gazprombank-affiliated management company, which acquired the stake at the end of 2024, with 10.2% in free circulation.

The confiscation involves assets worth approximately RUB 200 billion (about US$2,5 billion). The court alleges that Strukov gained control of the company through his position in state authorities.

This case marks another in a series of private asset seizures by the Russian state since 2022 and is the first of its kind in the country’s gold mining industry in recent years.

Russian law enforcement agencies have seized assets worth RUB 3.9 trillion (US$50 billion) for the state in recent years.

The nationalisation of Yuzhuralzoloto, one of Russia’s ten largest gold mining companies, will add approximately US$1 billion to this total.

Background: In early July, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office filed a lawsuit with the Sovetsky District Court in Chelyabinsk to transfer assets linked to Konstantin Strukov, the primary owner of Yuzhuralzoloto, to state ownership.

Russia and Belarus intend to develop their own artificial intelligence model built on "traditional values" that would be "understandable" to citizens of both countries.

Source: Sergei Glazyev, General Secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, at an international conference, as cited by the Belarusian state news agency BELTA

Quote: "The task is to develop our own AI, based on our traditional values, that can be trusted, relied upon and provide objective information."

Details: Glazyev said that Belarusian youth currently use mostly foreign AI tools – American or Chinese.

"However, recent examples of in-depth testing of Western-style AI have shown that one of the well-known chatbots fell into racism, Nazism and glorification of fascism," he claimed, likely referring to the case involving Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, which has repeatedly praised Adolf Hitler and spread antisemitic rhetoric.

"That’s why we need to be very careful about which values are embedded in artificial intelligence," Glazyev added.

Colonel Ivan Voronych of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) was shot dead in Kyiv on 10 July. The New York Times has information that he had taken part in a number of special operations, including the killing of Russian militant Arsen Pavlov, alias Motorola, and led a unit that advanced into Russia’s Kursk Oblast in 2024.

Source: The New York Times

Details: As reported by NYT citing anonymous colleagues of Voronych, the colonel served in the Alpha Special Operations Centre and had worked for the SSU for several decades.

He began his service in the mid-1990s and later commanded the Fifth Directorate – a unit that received technical support from the CIA and was involved in the killing of one of the commanders of the unrecognised Donetsk People’s Republic, Arsen Pavlov, alias Motorola.

It is noted that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Voronych was part of an elite group operating in the grey zone.

NYT says this unit played a key role in the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ advance into Russia’s Kursk Oblast in the summer of 2024.

The SSU has confirmed the killing of its officer and announced that it is investigating the circumstances. However, no details have been disclosed. NYT writes that officials have not suggested Moscow’s involvement in Voronych’s death.

"Colonel Voronych took a very active part in countering Russian aggression since 2014," former SSU head Ivan Bakanov, who knew Voronych personally, told NYT. "If the motive is domestic-related homicide, that’s one thing. But this could be a public execution carried out by the Russians, which is a completely different story that would require a set of immediate measures from the SSU".

Background:

On the morning of 10 July, a colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) was shot dead in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. An Ukrainska Pravda source stated that at around 09:00, a man approached SSU Colonel Ivan Voronych and fired five targeted shots from a pistol, then fled the scene of the crime. As a result of the shots, Voronych suffered multiple penetrating gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Ukrainian-American investment group MITS Capital has invested US$3.74 million in Tencore, a Ukrainian robotics company best known for its TerMIT multifunctional robotic system.

Source: press release from MITS Capital

Details: The deal was announced at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2025) in Rome. The investment was made directly into Tencore’s Ukrainian legal entity and structured through the Diia.City legal regime, a special framework designed to support technology businesses in Ukraine.

"MITS Capital is proud to sign the first Diia.City contract between a US investor and a Ukrainian DefenceTech company," said Perry Boyle, CEO and founding partner at MITS Capital.

MITS Capital noted that the deal opens up a legal path for international investors to invest directly in the Ukrainian jurisdiction without the need to seek workarounds.

"Since early 2025, Ukraine’s Diia.City, a special legal regime designed for tech companies, has expanded to the DefenceTech sector, with over 300 defence residents," the press release said.

MITS Capital explained that Article 29 of the Law On Stimulating the Development of the Digital Economy in Ukraine (also known as the "Diia.City law") provides the legal basis for convertible loan agreements. Investors are further protected by contract clauses that specify the applicable law and arbitration venues, including countries whose judicial decisions are automatically recognised in Ukraine.

"This mechanism makes investing in Ukrainian legal entities as secure as investing in a Delaware C-Corp or an Estonian e-Residency company," emphasised Denys Gurak, CIO and founding partner at MITS Capital.

MITS Capital, an investment group founded in 2024 with offices in Kyiv and New York, specialises in investment in Ukrainian defence technology innovations. As of July 2025, MITS Capital's portfolio comprises 11 companies.

Tencore is a Ukrainian-based developer and supplier of robotic platforms with a team of over 200 people. TerMIT has a modular architecture that can be adapted to various tasks. The platform can be used for logistics, evacuation missions, engineering operations support, including mining and demining, and fire support for frontline units.

Background: In June, it was announced that Ukrainian communications systems manufacturer Himera Radios and Tencore will collaborate to create stable and secure communications for ground-based robotic systems.

Kyrylo Budanov, Head of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), says he wants to stay in his post until the war with Russia is over.

Source: Budanov in an interview with Bloomberg

Details: Budanov is set to mark five years as chief of military intelligence next month. "If I survive," he said. When asked to elaborate, Budanov replied that "anything can happen" and referred to a memorial at the agency, which honours intelligence officers killed in action. He said there is still plenty of room for more names.

Budanov said he hopes to remain in his position until the war ends. "Now, my dream is to stop this war," he said. "Ukraine is a country of opportunities. In future, I’ll decide what I would like to do."

Budanov described the cooperation between Ukrainian intelligence and its Western counterparts as "excellent", adding that he expects the information exchange to continue. He noted that Ukraine depends on the United States for early warning about missile launches and for access to satellite imagery.

Bloomberg points out that Budanov has become one of the most prominent public figures in Ukraine. A recent poll by the Rating sociological group, conducted on 4-5 July, placed Budanov among the three most trusted officials. According to the results, 56% of Ukrainians trust him, compared to 67% for President Zelenskyy and 73% for former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Republican senators say reports that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth unilaterally froze arms deliveries to Ukraine without authorisation from President Donald Trump raise serious concerns about the level of coordination between the White House and the Pentagon. They are calling for a closer review of the matter by Congress.

Source: The Hill, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Lawmakers from the Republican Party suggest the freeze on weapons deliveries may have resulted from a "miscommunication" between Trump and Hegseth.

An unnamed aide to a Republican senator described it as "a clear goof-up on a lot of levels".

Republican sources told The Hill that if Hegseth or members of his team deliberately took steps to bypass the commander-in-chief, it would pose a serious problem.

Republican senators are "alarmed" by reports that Hegseth may have halted weapons deliveries to Ukraine on multiple occasions without informing them, and they now want a detailed account of who in the Pentagon was involved in the freeze.

"That’s a problem," said one Republican senator who requested anonymity.

"To hear there may have been other pauses or this pause went on longer than any of us know, to me that’s alarming," the lawmaker said.

One of the harshest remarks came from Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who told CNN in an interview that Hegseth’s decision to halt arms deliveries to Ukraine was "amateurish".

"Now, with the passing of time, I think it’s clear he’s out of his depth as a manager of a large, complex organisation," the senator added.

Senator Lindsey Graham said that Congress must get to "the bottom" of who gave the order to freeze arms deliveries and why.

Democratic Senator Jack Reed believes there was clearly a major breakdown in communication between Hegseth and Trump, something also confirmed by Republican sources.

The sources say that Hegseth acted on a misunderstanding of what Trump actually intended regarding the weapons in question.

Background:

Last week, it was reported that the Pentagon had suspended deliveries of some artillery shells and air defence equipment to Ukraine, citing the need to preserve stocks for other potential threats.Earlier, media reports indicated that Hegseth had unilaterally ordered a halt to the transfer of certain types of weapons to Ukraine despite a military analysis having established that these supplies would not pose a threat to US combat readiness. He also did not inform the White House of his decision before the freeze was implemented. On 7 July, Trump stated that the United States must provide Ukraine with weapons for its defence. According to media reports, in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump stated that he had not personally been involved in the decision to suspend supplies.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has clarified that President Donald Trump’s statement about NATO supposedly funding American weapons for Ukraine referred to an existing mechanism, whereby European allies purchase US-made weapons to transfer them to Kyiv.

Source: Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Trump said he had reached an agreement under which the North Atlantic Alliance would pay for American assistance to Ukraine.

Commenting on this, Rubio said it was not about a new scheme for supplying arms to Ukraine, but rather one of the existing formats.

He explained that this involves European countries purchasing American-made weapons and then transferring them to Ukraine.

Quote: "At the end of the day, some of the systems that Ukraine requires are systems that Europe doesn’t make. They would have to purchase them from the United States. In addition to that, I’d point to the fact that a number of the defensive weapons that Ukraine seeks, our allies in NATO have them… and some have placed orders for that."

Details: Rubio said that the US is urging its allies to transfer the necessary weapons to Ukraine from their own stockpiles and then purchase replacements from the United States.

Quote: "It’s a lot faster to move something, for example, from Germany to Ukraine, than it is to order it from a factory and get it there. So there are a couple of different ways to approach it, but the key is that there are exciting US systems within Europe right now that could be transferred to Ukraine. And then the Europeans could purchase the replacements from the United States. That’s one aspect of what, I think, the president was referring to yesterday."

Background:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Germany and Norway are ready to buy three Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine from a US manufacturer. It was also unofficially reported that Trump is preparing, for the first time during his current term, to send US$300 million worth of weapons from US stockpiles to Ukraine under the Presidential Drawdown Authority – a mechanism frequently employed by Joe Biden.

Paweł Wroński, the spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has stated that Warsaw will prepare an "adequate" response to Russia’s decision to close the Polish consulate in Kaliningrad from 29 August, but did not specify what this response will entail or when it will be implemented.

Source: TVP Info, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Wroński noted that Russia justifies its decision as a mirror response to Poland’s closure of the Russian consulate in Kraków.

However, he emphasised that Russia’s decision is unjust, as the Kraków consulate was closed due to evidence of Russian special services’ involvement in an arson attack on a Warsaw shopping centre in 2024.

Quote from Wroński:  "Poland is not taking action against the Russian state."

He promised an "adequate response" from Polish authorities but did not elaborate on its nature or timing.

Wroński noted that the closure of the Kaliningrad consulate will primarily affect Russians applying for visas.

Kyrylo Budanov, Head of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, has asserted that Russia will not be able to seize the entire Donetsk Oblast by the end of 2025.

Source: Budanov in an interview with Bloomberg

Quote from Budanov: "It’s not realistic for Russia to seize all of Donetsk Oblast by the end of the year."

Details: Budanov notes that Russian troops "have a political goal to declare" that they entered Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and are tasked with creating another buffer zone up to 10 kilometres deep.

Budanov also said that a cessation of hostilities well before the end of the year is realistic.

Quote: "Is it realistic to do so – yes. Is it difficult – no. It takes at least three sides: Ukraine, Russia and the US. And we will get to this position."

Background:

The DeepState analytical project reported that Russian forces occupied 556 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory in June, marking the largest monthly figure in 2025.On 1 July, for the first time since February, the General Staff's operational maps of the front line showed Russian advances in Sumy Oblast (North Slobozhanshchyna front).

The Russian authorities have reported that several Russian regions came under a large-scale drone attack, with explosions heard in Kursk Oblast, the city of Tula in Tula Oblast and Dubna near Moscow, where the Kronshtadt plant, which manufactures drones, is located.

Source: Astra Telegram channel; Kursk Oblast Governor Alexander Khinshtein; Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin; Tula Oblast Governor Dmitry Milyayev; Lipetsk Oblast Governor Igor Artamonov; Russian Defence Ministry

Details: According to Khinshtein, the drone attack began late in the evening of 10 July.

"Ukrainian UAVs attacked the Pselskoye LLC facility in the village of Maloye Soldatskoye in the Belaya district. A fire broke out in the production premises of the facility where machinery was located," he said, adding that no one was injured.

Later, he added that the village of Imeni Karla Libknekhta in the Kurchatov district had also been attacked.

"A strike on a facility has caused a fire to break out at a warehouse containing timber, covering an area of about 50 sq m. Fire crews are at the scene, working to extinguish the open flames, dousing the area and dismantling the structures. There are no casualties," Khinshtein reported.

At about 01:00, the Astra Telegram channel reported that flight restrictions had been introduced at Zhukovsky Airport in Moscow.

Explosions were heard in Dubna in Moscow Oblast. According to local residents, UAVs attacked the Kronshtadt drone manufacturing plant, which had previously been targeted in May 2025.

Sobyanin claimed that air defences had destroyed one drone heading towards Moscow.

"Emergency services are working at the scene of the debris crash," he wrote.

Residents of the town of Lukhovitsy in Moscow Oblast also reported a drone attack overnight. Astra noted that the P. A. Voronin Lukhovitsk Aviation Plant and a local oil depot are located near the reported scene of the attack. It remains unclear which facility was targeted.

Astra geolocated eyewitness videos and concluded that the drones may have targeted one of the following facilities: Instrument Design Bureau, which develops high-precision guided weapons; NPO Splav, which produces multiple-launch rocket systems; or Shcheglovsky Val, one of the largest defence businesses developing guided weapons for ground forces, air defence systems, or firearms.

There is no confirmed information on the consequences of the attacks.

The Instrument Design Bureau was previously attacked by UAVs on 18 and 20 June. On 18 June, an electrical substation, three product storage facilities and an office building were damaged. On 20 June, a drone hit a storage facility used for loading finished products, damaging its roof and walls. The facility suspended operations.

Shcheglovsky Val was attacked by drones on 25 May, damaging one of the plant's workshops (roof and windows).

NPO Splav was attacked by drones on 7 and 22 May. During the latter strike, an operating workshop was hit and an electrical substation caught fire.

Tula Oblast Governor Dmitry Milyayev confirmed the attack on Tula Oblast.

He claimed that 13 UAVs had been downed over the region, with one person killed and another injured.

Lipetsk Oblast Governor Igor Artamonov reported that a drone had "fallen" onto the grounds of an agricultural business in the Khlevnoye district, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished. One person was killed and another injured.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 155 Ukrainian drones.

Specifically, 53 drones were supposedly destroyed over Kursk Oblast, 19 over Bryansk Oblast, 15 over Smolensk Oblast, 14 over Belgorod Oblast, 13 over Tula Oblast, 11 over each of Oryol and Moscow oblasts, four over Lipetsk Oblast, two over each of Rostov and Kaluga oblasts, seven over temporarily occupied Crimea and four over the Black Sea.

The defence ministry did not disclose the total number of drones involved in the attack, reporting only the number supposedly intercepted. No information on damage or consequences was provided.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Russia is obliged to compensate Ukraine for the damage caused by the full-scale war, estimated at around €500 billion.

Source: Merz on the sidelines of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, quoted by the website of the German Federal Government, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine

Details: Berlin estimates that the amount of damage caused is approximately €500 billion.

Merz said that Russia must compensate for the material damage and that, until this happens, it will not and should not have access to frozen assets.

He also noted that Russian state assets worth hundreds of billions of euros, mainly located in European Union countries, will remain frozen. Income from these assets will continue to be used to provide credit support to Ukraine.

A section of a major gas pipeline serving Russian defence industrial base companies in Chelyabinsk, Orenburg and Sverdlovsk Oblasts has been destroyed as a result of a special operation by Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU).

Source: UP source in DIU

Details: As the source says, on the evening of 10 July, a powerful explosion followed by a large-scale fire occurred in the Russian city of Langepas in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of Tyumen Oblast.

The UP source notes that the capacity of the affected gas pipeline is 2.6 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year. And given the distance between the gas compressor stations (about 20 kilometres), there was approximately 4,112,000 cubic metres of gas in the two pipes damaged by the explosions.

According to intelligence estimates, since the price of 1,000 cubic metres of gas is currently around US$350, the amount of damage caused at a single moment is at least US$1.3 million.

A source in DIU explains that the restoration and testing of the gas pipeline will take about a month, as the damaged pipes are located in marshy terrain, which complicates the work of repair crews and will reduce the volume of gas supplies to 25 million cubic metres during this period.

US Major General John Rafferty has stated that NATO must bolster its arsenal of long-range missiles to deter Russia from attacking Europe.

Source: Rafferty in an interview with Reuters, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Rafferty was interviewed at a US military base in Wiesbaden, Germany.

UK intelligence has analysed the losses that Russian forces have sustained in the war against Ukraine since the beginning of 2025.

Source: UK Defence Intelligence update dated 11 July on X (Twitter), as reported by European Pravda

Details: UK intelligence believes that in 2025 alone, Russia may have lost approximately 236,000 soldiers (killed and wounded) in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

This brings the total number of Russian personnel killed and wounded since the start of the full-scale invasion to over one million.

UK Defence Intelligence reported, citing data from Ukraine's General Staff, that Russia's average daily losses (killed and wounded) in June 2025 were approximately 1,080, totalling around 32,000 soldiers for the month.

The update noted that Russia's losses have been declining moderately every month since March 2025, with the average daily figure in June being the lowest since April 2024.

UK intelligence also noted that in previous years of the war, there has been a moderate decrease in Russian military losses with the onset of summer, likely due to improved weather conditions increasing survival rates among those wounded.

Background:

In early June, UK intelligence reported that Russia had lost about 1 million military personnel (killed and wounded) since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war in February 2022.UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that the loss of one million Russian troops in Ukraine shows that Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin is using Russians as cannon fodder.
