Welcome to Maple Music, a community on the Lemmy.ca instance focused on bringing attention to Canadian music and musicians!

Like everything else, Canada has a rich music culture, spanning from the traditional music of the First Nations to a unique spot in the Punjabi music scene, a rich variety of folk performers to the big names in pop, and established underground music cultures such as the Edmonton hiphop and rap scene to the metal scene in the Atlantic provinces.

This community allows for postings of Canadian music news, covering anything from the local scene to world-renowned names such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Celine Dion. It also allows for sharing Canadian musicians you wish to give a spotlight to, individual songs and albums by Canadian artists you enjoy, and even a bit of Canadian music history seeing how poorly documented some Canadian music history can be at times.

--

Please post albums using album.link and songs using songs.link! This allows people to listen to the song on whichever platform they prefer, assuming that it is available there. This is not strictly required, but is the most ideal way to share music.

Community Rules and Guidelines:

  1. Follow Site-wide rules: We are all guests in lemmy.ca's house. The house has rules that we must follow. We are polite guests.

  2. Formatting: Song and Album posts should follow the this format: "Musician - Title [Genre] (Year) (track length)". Genre, Year, and track length are not required but encouraged. Posts regarding news articles must include the article title in the post's title. Otherwise, make titles relevant to what you are trying to talk about.

  3. On Topic Posts only: All posts must be related to the Canadian music scene to some extent. For example: News about Taylor Swift will be removed. News about Taylor Swift having a Canadian tour will be kept.

  4. French & English Equal: French and English content, posts, and comments are equally welcomed and encouraged.

  5. Self-Made Music Welcomed: Are you Canadian and artistically talented? Feel free to post it here! Please do limit excessive self promotion however.

The No Rules:

  1. No shaming of music tastes: Mumble rap is not for everyone, and neither is country or dubstep. Avoid all "real music" type comments. Refrain from downvoting music that is not your taste, everyone should feel welcome regardless of the genre you enjoy.

  2. No music piracy. Much of the musicians and music shared here are likely small independent acts that deserve fiscal support. If money is an issue, please look into free and/or Creative Commons releases, a list of such titles will be made and built on as the community grows.

  3. No Spam: Please avoid spam. Rather than make individual posts for each song by a musician you like, instead make a singular post bringing attention to the musician. This applies for self-promotion posts as well.

  4. No AI Generated content: AI music posts will be deleted. This community is made to support Canadian talent. An AI cannot be Canadian, nor can it generate truly original content without infringing on countless other artist's copyrights.

  5. No doing stuff that makes me need to make more rules: Moderation reserves the right to take action on anything seen as detrimental to the community. Just cause I didn't write it down here doesn't mean it is necessarily allowed.

Rules are subject to change as the community grows.

Yet another group from Montreal!

I swear I'll take a break after this one :)

Out of Gatineau, QC, another good downtempo choice for a Sunday morning.

I was struggling with choosing one Apollo Suns song, as they have a lot of variety, but this one catches a lot of the funk-jazz-psych aspects, and the video is cute AF.

A very talented group of artists coming based out of Winnipeg, MB. They are sooooo high on my live music wishlist.

From Ottawa, ON, music for hackin' darts and breakin' hearts :)

Surfy rockabilly trio out of Toronto, ON! They were an opener for the 5.6.7.8's when they played at House of Targ in Ottawa a couple years back, and a fantastic choice for that.

More punk out of Ottawa, ON!

Amphibious jazz fusion from Montreal, QC! Have seen them a couple times and it's always been a blast.

sundayclub is another up and coming Canadian band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is their first song with Paper Bag Records, with the primary artists being Courtney Carmichael and Nikki St. Pierre.

Being very very new, you can can find more info about them their social links in the description of their youtube video.

Looking to make a theme with my posts rather than haphazardly posting random songs, I think for today I'm going to focus on new music rather than posting to oldies and well known songs.

Anyone think that making themed days/weeks/months would be fun? I think something simple like "New Music Monday" could be cool.

This is a newer and upcoming Canadian band from Montreal! They are about to drop their first full length album in two days on the 11th of July. Learn more about them at https://www.mothland.com/karma-glider.

Apologies for the delay in posts! I just moved back home to Canada and was busy getting into the grove of life here but things are settling down and I will have free time to make more posts! I really appreciate everyone that kept this and my other communities active while I was away for a bit.

It's good to be back home in Canada!

Violett Pi (real name: Karl Gagnon) is a québécois artist originally from Granby. Naming himself after a flower (violets) and the irrational number π, his music reflects the beauty in the nonsensical. Inspired by bands like Nirvana and Mr. Bungle, his discography is eclectic, honest, and raw.

I had the chance to see him and his band open for one of my favourite artists a few years ago, the energy they had on stage was amazing, honestly one of the best live performances I've seen, despite a small, somewhat-timid crowd.

Is it “All shall align” the album or the song?

Yes.

Canada's Really Big is from Arrogant Worms' 1997 album Live Bait, released in 1997. The band is from Kingston, Ontario, and is still active with all of its original band members! Their songs are focused on comedy with a focus on Canadian topics.

This song is best described by Roger Whittaker (Kenyan-born British Citizen) himself:

"CANADA IS was written by two young Canadians: Eric Robertson and Steve Hyde. To me it is special ... very special. It sums up in words and music my feelings for a country I have visited and enjoyed so many times. I have sung it on countless occasions in concert since it was first recorded in 1974 and every time, without exception, it has been emotionally and movingly received.

In all my world travels, it is quite the loveliest tribute to any country I have ever heard. It is appropriate to release it as a single now. To Canada - Thanks for all our good times. I salute your future." ~ Roger Whittaker

Hey all!

This community has just hit a milestone of 200 community members! Also, it will be Canada Day in just a few days on the 1st of July, this Tuesday!

While this community is already inherently quite patriotic, given the focus on Canadian musicians and culture, I thought it would be nice to dedicate the next few days to songs that are more than just made by Canadians, but about Canada itself.

I believe we have a wonderful country, full of wonderful people. Let's celebrate that!

I didn't realize until recently Mother Mother was Canadian and they're easily one of my bands.

Heart of Gold is considered not only one of the greatest songs by Neil Young, not only the greatest song created by a Canadian artist, but to many it is considered to be one of the greatest songs ever created - Ranking #259/500 on the Rolling Stone's 2021 greatest songs of all time list. Notably, the ranking has increased from its previous #297/500 spot from 2004.

The song was first performed early 1971, recorded later that year, and then published as part of the Harvest album. The song currently has nearly half a billion listens on spotify (extremely impression for a song published 50 years ago!).

Neil Young's music career has seen him celebrated by people over both sides of the border, winning multiple Grammys, Juno Awards, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There can be (and probably are) entire books that could be written about Neil Young's talent's and influence over the modern music industry.

Personally, Heart of Gold is one of my favourite songs of all time. I don't have the vernacular or the musical understanding to praise it on anything but an amateurish level, but it strikes me as a song that has soul deeply embedded into it. For me, it is a song about the endless search for good in a world that seem hell bend on obscuring it. But a person should never stop searching for it.

I think this is a song that resonates differently for each person that listens to it.
