“Dry conditions are not new to the Special Areas, but ongoing moisture deficiencies and hot temperatures have devastated crops and pasture throughout the region. Producers are struggling to find enough grass, water, and feed for their cattle. Farmers are facing widespread crop failures. Significant grasshopper infestations are making a very difficult situation worse in many parts of the Special Areas. Declaring an agricultural disaster is one way we can raise awareness of how serious this problem is with the province and with the federal government.” Jordon Christianson, Chair

I had no idea that McDonald's had different prices for the same items in different locations. Like it makes sense in retrospect but damn, nugs at a 50% premium depending on where you get them.

“The fire is still in progress and it looks like it will take out our entire Charleston residence,” said Dan Markham, communications director for Skiing Louise.

We were staying at a group campsite in Writing On Stone Provincial Park and an intense thunderstorm came over. These 3 trees were hit with a lightning strike. Loud. Bright. But no fire.

After 19 years, Alberta's graduated driver’s licence program is getting an overhaul. Come spring 2023, drivers with a GDL will no longer have to do the $150 advanced road test for Class 5 and Class 6 motorcycle licences and an additional road test will no longer be required to upgrade to a Class 4.

An Alberta MP is filing an "official grievance" with the House of Commons calling on Taylor Swift to bring her Eras Tour to Canada.

"It has come to my attention that despite much anticipation, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has neglected to include any Canadian dates or locations as she released her international dates, with includes stops throughout Asia and Europe," Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux wrote in a letter addressed to House Speaker Anthony Rota on Wednesday.

The park received more than 100 mm of rain and 55 cm of snow in some locations. Public safety is our first priority and fortunately, no significant injuries have been reported. ❄ 🌧

Parks Canada is working on assessing the safety of roads, including the risk of avalanches or mud slides. We recognize this situation may cause delays and impact visitor travel plans. On Monday, Parks Canada brought approximately 60 people to safety, including hikers on the Skyline trail, paddlers on Maligne Lake and two tour buses full of passengers from Maligne Road, and staff continue to respond to stranded travellers.

⚠ Parks Canada expects to have the Miette Road open for single-lane traffic for visitors to leave Miette Hot Springs area by 7 pm, June 20. Maligne Road will remain closed for at least 48-72 hours to allow for any avalanches triggered by the storm to come down and to complete debris removal.

❗ If you're aware of a backcountry camper who hasn't checked in or arrived at their destination as anticipated, please call Parks Canada Dispatch at 780-852-6155. If you are aware of a motorist who hasn't reached their destination, call the RCMP at 780-852-4848. Photo: Maligne Road, June 19, 2023

Researchers from ETH Zurich studied Calgary's urban design and found that the city lacks buildings that would promote denser and more efficient neighborhoods, such as mid-rise apartments and row houses. They also noted the city's car dependency and the presence of large roads, which hinder walkability. The students emphasized the need for diverse housing options, especially for low-income groups and the elderly. Calgary's ample land availability contributes to the abundance of affordable standalone houses. The city's parking lots were highlighted as an opportunity for redevelopment. An assistant professor from the University of Calgary emphasized the importance of learning from other cities' experiences in urban design. Recently, Calgary's city council approved new zoning regulations to facilitate the construction of more affordable housing types in suitable areas. However, there have been debates and reversals regarding these changes.

I'm told the beloved Beaverlodge /Grande Prairie Doctor suffered a fatal accident. Short on details and don't want to spread rumors. Will try to update when I know more.

I had seen him a few times in the emergency rooms. Always a great guy. He will definitely be missed.

Spray Lakes Sawmills is planning to clearcut trees in the Moose Mountain area. This area sees tons of hikers, mountain bikers, and other recreationalists. It would be INCREDIBLY short sighted to proceed with this plan as we'd be sacrificing a huge tourist draw for a brief cash grab. Please consider signing the petition!

My s/o came home last night after her shift at the hospital. She's not allowed to discuss details of course, but this one definitely got under her skin.
