Cockatrice is an open-source, multiplatform program for playing tabletop card games over a network. The program's server design prevents users from manipulating the game for unfair advantage. The client also provides a single-player mode, which allows users to brew while offline.

XMage is one of the open source options for playing Magic online with people.

XMage allows you to play Magic against one or more online players or computer opponents. It includes full rules enforcement for over 10,000 unique cards (nearly 20,000 counting all cards from different editions). Starting with Eventide, all regular sets have nearly all the cards implemented.
