"The school board says Beattie has decided to take medical leave. According to school board chair Maya Russell the board does not have the ability to remove a trustee in this case under the School Act, but are requesting she resign immediately."

Does she think she will be able to come back to her job after this?

Just a casual look at AirBnB shows more than a thousand listings in Vancouver alone! Which makes sense, if you can rent out a suite for significantly more on AirBnB than you can to a local, long term renter, why wouldn't you?

With AirBnB, you can reserve dates you want to use your suite, don't have to worry about trying to evict a long term tenant and probably don't have to meet any of the legal requirements that are attached to long term rentals.

In a world with AirBnB, what incentive is there for those low budget rentals?

EDIT: It is also on order at Coquitlam Public Library.

If you want to see everything else that's on order at VPL atm, here's the link (Atlas Fallen and The Endless Dungeon were just added as well iirc).

It looked like my post from my beehaw account didn't show up for my lemmy.ca account, I'm not sure why... Anyways, here's that post again!

A “motor vehicle incident” that occurred in Surrey Sunday morning is being investigated by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., the police oversight agency confirmed. [Looks like an RCMP vehicle was involved in a crash, as were two sedans and a minivan.)

A New Westminster school board trustee has been revealed to be behind a Twitter account that was trolling community members. Dee Beattie was apparently tweeting under the fake account @AlfromNW / Allan Whitterstone for months.

I really like the coffee at Le Monaco near Gastown, but the chairs aren't terribly comfortable. Where's another good go-to spot?

According to the latest Canadian Rental Report from Zumper, the median rental price has hit an all-time high in the city.

It says a one-bedroom rental in Vancouver will now set you back $2,700 per month — an increase of about 20.5 per cent year over year.

Zumper says compared to last month, rents in June have risen almost four per cent.

Lots more info in the Zumper report.

A few years ago I created a Telegram channel which pulls around 10 top voted news every day from r/Vancouver and post it there: https://t.me/vancitynews It's a handy way to get local news, try it out

Now I'm thinking: Is it a good idea to automatically post those news here to spark a discussions and make this community more alive? Is it even allowed to automatically post anything? What do you think?

I'm pretty sure that the new Reddit policy will not affect my channel which calls reddit.com just a handful times per day

How much do people tip? (self.vancouver)
submitted 2 years ago by zephyreks to c/vancouver

I'm so lost on how to tip anymore. I remember back when 12% pre-tax was considered a really good tip, but now the kiosks recommend 20-25% (which is usually ON TOP of tax).

I already don't tip anywhere I'm not sitting down with service, but 20-25% is crazy when I'm just trying to get fed.
