I’ve been promoting Lemmy for this past week since hearing more about it and seeing it has a great app now. Although the process of actually signing up myself has been a bit of frustrating nightmare lol.
To start, when I originally signed up I must have entered in my email incorrectly. Which usually isn’t a big deal since with most sites you can just sign back up under the correct email. However, because I used the wrong email, the username I created and really liked has become locked out from use. This was really disheartening for me since I was so eager to sign up under a fresh username to start my Lemmy experience off on the right foot. I desperately tried to look for who to contact for how I could fix this issue, but everywhere I looked to report a problem/request help required already having an account.
After accepting the fate of my preferred username being locked out I gave up and decided to just move on under a similar username for signing up. However, this time when I signed up under the right email, I found out that my application was rejected for some reason. This left me very confused since I followed the sign up protocol of typing “Lemmy In” which I thought was a cute way of acknowledging I was a real person that read the rules. Upon looking at some of the other servers though I saw that for some reason they just reject people that just type in “Lemmy In” even though I was prompted to type that???
The unfortunate thing is I don’t even see a way to appeal the rejected application so now the backup username and my email associated with the account both can’t be used on the server. Does anyone have any advice for what to do? I’m sure a good chunk of other potential new users are getting stuck on entry, that are eager to join Lemmy, but running into similar issues.
TL;DR: It’s taken me a whole week just to make an account, and I can’t have my top two names or use my preferred email for the account.
Ah I see what happened here.
We go through our applications manually, and part of that application process explicitly states "Please say you agree to our instance rules found in the sidebar of the front page"
"Lemmy in" applications are assumed bots and get auto denied.
I DM'd you to take some further action to see if we can get your desired username.
😬 I would bet all “Lemmy in” users are all not bots, just users typing the placeholder text of the field in voyager app.
I’m gonna remove that placeholder text cause yikes!
Is THAT why we started getting so many? Huh. I guess that makes sense.
Shoutout though, replying to you from the voyager app 👌
