I read Albert Facey’s autobiographical A Fortunate Life as a kid. I don’t remember much about it apart from a hard childhood in remote Western Australia and then enlisting for The Great War. I saw that the 1986 made for television mini-series is on Tubi at the moment, so I’m giving it a watch.

@[email protected] I haven't seen the mini-series, but I loved the book. Kid gets sent to a neighbouring farm for an apprenticeship, gets treated like a dog, whipped. Escapes. Goes to war. Complains about the ANZACs being stuck on a train with a carriage full of sand to poo in. Gets a donation of socks, and swears he'll marry the girl in the attached photo. Gets blown up. Comes home and happens to pass the socks girl. Marries her. Burns down the house. Gets old and boring. Complains about his illnesses. Writes a book, much of which may or may not be true.
