I tried matrix a while back, and it felt like using an "early-access" game. It just didn't quite work as it should

How long ago did you try it? Did you try an other federated chat clients?

It does have some rough edges that make adoption difficult but once you persavere beyond those poinpoints I start to like it. I had considered switching to something else like XMPP but I already have so many channels on Matrix I'd hate to try to get people to switch. I'm not certain I want to run to different services even if I could bridge them.
