Huh, I've beaten the game with Huntress more often than any other character, and for me she's really strong even in the early game.

The bow means you can often kill enemies before they even get close to you. You just have to pick where you fight your battles very carefully at times.

She's so weak with melee early on though. This is my best with her and I didn't get a weapon I could use until just before Temu .

She is, but there are a few things you can do to avoid having to getting into melee:

sneak attack (use doorways, pillars, grass) as much as possible
snipe from behind tall grass (you can scope out enemy locations, hide behind grass and then shoot enemies with the bow even if you can't see them, which makes every shot a sneak attack)
Use seeds for crowd control
Use thrown weapons/wands as much as possible

This usually keeps me going until I find a good tier 3 or 4 weapon in the prison.
