Fediverse vs Disinformation

770 readers
195 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

This article is a couple of weeks old now, but I thought it was important to remind people that despite the fact I've posted a lot recently about Russian and Chinese disinformation, the US also has a track record of engaging in disinformation campaigns against it's adversaries.

Yes, we know that but it's OK because we (the west that is) are the good guys.

I know you jest, but this approach is seriously worrying. It let's other parts of the world do exactly the same to you and for the same reasons.

Well yes, but it's always been this way. Unfortunately I can't see it stopping anytime soon. We need to draw a line somewhere but I don't know where that is. China wasn't really that forthcoming with info though, perhaps if they'd been upfront from the beginning then this episode might not have happened, it would certainly have been pointless.

Every single person who did this should be hung.

I really mean this, absolute crimes against humanity. These are the orders you need to refuse.
