It is inspired by games such as Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.

You can play single player or multi-player, standalone or use an online server, or even host your own server in a Docker container, or on a Raspberry Pi. Plenty of options!

You start by creating your character, you can collect items for your inventory, you can craft items, there are weapons and combat, you develop skills, can tame creatures, you can trade with merchants, you can socialise, and lost more. There is no single, specific goal or focus, and the idea is to keep exploring and have adventures.

The game is community driven and actually updates quite regularly.

It is clearly no clone of Minecraft. It is fun and adventure!

I've seen discussion of Veloren but I never knew it was open source. Roped some friends into trying it and we're impressed by how much more content it already has compared to Cube World.

And it seems to be updating very regularly too...

This looks awesome! I have no clue what I'm doing while playing so I probably look silly in-world heh.

I saw some excellent getting started videos - they at least get you orientated. But collect lots of cotton and you can trade that with merchants in towns for items you need to craft into weapons or armour, etc.

Thanks for sharing! This looks delightful

This looks pretty cool, love that it's written in Rust and moreover that it runs on Linux. Definitely gonna try this.

Any word on Steam Deck compatibility?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

I don’t have a steam deck but it is linux native so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get running on steam deck

It currently needs to be run via xwayland or x11 due to some bug and controller input is not great. Should be doable with the touch input on the SD though. There were some people on the chat reporting that it can be made to work on the SD and that it runs well.

Awesome! I will check it out!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Interesting. I will give it a try

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

I just downloaded and messed around and I think I have something new to sink my hours into. This is awesome!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Oo this looks super interesting, I'm gonna download it today and try it out.

My friend group was burned on Cube World, and this game looks and plays exactly the way we liked how Cube World used to.. I'm going to drop this on them and see how they react, played a few minutes of it and it satisfies that voxel itch

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Going to try this out with my 8 yr old.

[–] sup 3 points 2 years ago

Wow, that's amazing!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Glad flatpak is supported. Definitely trying this on my Batocera box.

Thanks for reminding me of the game that was never finished. -_-

Voxel Quest is (let's be honest!) probably more of a research project than a game. It is an attempt to explore new areas in rendering, procedural generation, simulation, and AI. At this point, it is entirely free and I work on it as a hobby in my spare time. -https://www.voxelquest.com

This one looks like fun, though. I'll add it to the backlog.

Not very active but they have an official community on Lemmy: https://lemmy.ml/c/veloren

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Wow did not know that

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Veloren is wonderful. My 6 year old and I play it sometimes. It's still VERY early in development, but completely playable and fun, as long as you're willing to go looking.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I love Veloren! Development is very active, so you get to see changes happen quickly.

I liked the cool of cube world really unfortunate that as far as i can tell it didnt go in a good direction i hope this succeeds

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Woah this looks really neat. I'll have to try this out. How are the controls?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been using keyboard and mouse but you can remap them.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Good to know! I may give it a try on steam deck since they have a native Linux build.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Keyboard and mouse. Controller sort of works but the inventory etc needs an overhaul to work with controllers.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Gotcha. I'll test it out on my steam deck and see if I can find something usable as far as mapping custom controls

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I know that! It's amazing, and actively developed! I really encourage to give it a try

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

This looks like heaps of fun!

Cool i loved cube world back in the day, might try this out for a bit

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

F's in chat for Cube World.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

It certainly does have Cube World vibes, I think it might be less busy textures per block vs the fairly busy textures on Minecraft blocks. Might give this one a roll. I think Trove the last "other Mincraft style" game I've played much.
