Are badges currently functional? If so, how do they work/what is the purpose? (kbin.social)

It's my assumption that they are supposed to function like flair; for instance, on a game magazine I mod, I'd add a badge so a post could be flared for a specific platform for patch notes, and users could search for their "platform specific" posts.

Am I misinterpreting that? Or is that what it's intended use is and it's just not functional for now?
