Alternate History is a Subgenre of Speculative fiction about what would happen if a event in history happened differently.

A quick history of Alternate History Ab Urbe Condita Libri is possibly the first example of Alternate History written in Latin between 27 and 9 BC by the Roman historian Titus Livius it tells a story where Alexander the Great didn't die prematurely and Rome still beats Macedonia. This trope of the writers side still winning even though logically they should not is still a common trope in AH today. Harry Norman Turtledove is a major author for AH and other works in the modern day and his stories have gone on to inspire many others.

How to get ideas for writing? As Alternate History is about history the ideas are limitless. From making a small change in leadership or creating a massive change in how major events went down looking through history itself will give many ideas

Writing and story making There are many ways to format your story. From telling it from the 3rd person or through the eyes of someone living in this world there are many options. Some use AH as a vector for making maps, flags ETC of alternate nations. Fake Wiki articles are also a popular format(please do not vandalize articles use the sandbox or other means)

conclusion Alternate History is a fun topic to write about with endless stories just waiting to be written this guide will be updated as needed thank you for reading!

Yes that’s right the US created a WW2 alternate history

It has lore, patches for fictional soldiers, a fictional mainland US invasion by a nation known as “Aggressor” and even a fictional language! All this for training. There are several modern versions of this too but as far as I’m aware this is the oldest and most lore rich project.

Check it out!

Accidental travel is a pretty normal writing trope one which is used in alternate history every once in a while A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Guns of the south (not sure if this one was a accidental time travel) plenty others but this. This is something else "popadantsi” is found in Russian works. Mainly propaganda works for the government and the stories within are sure something. Just so you can understand I’d like you to look at this 100% real cover of a book that was really released.

According to a rough Translation this is what I got

MILITARY-HISTORICAL SCI-FI

Victor Dubcek

RED PADWAN

I have not confirmed if permission was granted to use Darth Vader on this cover but I’m leaning no because. Well look at it. Anyways thanks for reading my 2am rant about a weird sub section? I think that’s what you’d call it of alternate history

From wikipedia

“Although disputed, Tandey allegedly encountered Adolf Hitler at the French village of Marcoing on 28 September 1918, while Tandey was serving with the 5th Duke of Wellington's Regiment. That day, Tandey took part in a battle for which he would be awarded the VC for bravery. As the battle neared its end, a wounded German soldier wandered into Tandey's line of fire and he chose not to shoot. The German soldier saw him lower his rifle and nodded his thanks before wandering off. Although Tandey reputedly commonly spared wounded and disarmed German soldiers, the soldier from that day is dubiously claimed to have been Hitler. Hitler, however, took his second leave from military service from 10–28 September 1918, indicating that he was still in Germany at the time. Tandey was decorated with the VC in late 1919, after which reports of the ceremony circulated with a picture of Tandey carrying a wounded soldier during the First Battle of Ypres (1914), which Hitler may have become aware of.

For me it really depends

My favorite alternate history books are not even remotely in the realm of possibility but I still like a serious work every once in a while
