Hi, guys. It's been 15 years since Bionicle's 2010 story arc (Bionicle Stars) happened. Specifically, the story arc happened on early 2010.
It takes place after the 2009 story arc, where Mata Nui and his Bara Magna allies defeated the Skrall and Bone Hunters and formed a Mega-Village. Mata Nui and his friends went on a journey to find the Valley of the Maze because Mata Nui believed the Valley may have something that he could use to reclaim his kingdom, the Matoran Universe, and his 40-million-foot-tall robotic body that contained it from his archenemy, Makuta Teridax. However, Berix got hurt because of a group of Skrall, so Mata Nui decided to go alone. He found the Valley. He survived traps in there. He found Tarduk. When Mata Nui came across a computer of some sort, he remembered what he had forgotten: he and his original body were created by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, the Earth-like planet that Bara Magna, Aqua Magna, and Bota Magna were once part of. The planet was shattered around 100,001 years ago because of the Core War. Mata Nui also discovered that there has to be two giant robots to restore Spherus Magna. The two-robot part saddened Mata Nui, but Tarduk advised him to use the prototype of Mata Nui's original body, and the prototype was used by the Agori to form the Mega-Village. Mata Nui and Tarduk found the power source for the prototype. Mata Nui and Tarduk came back to the Mega-Village with the power source. Mata Nui told everyone from the Mega-Village what he really is and asked Raanu, the leader of the people, for permission to use the prototype. Raanu was hesitant at first, but since he witnessed the Great Beings creating Mata Nui, he let Mata Nui use the prototype. Mata Nui used the prototype as his new body. He tried to reunite the three large pieces of Spherus Magna to restore it. However, Makuta noticed that Mata Nui is alive, so after he crushed many rebellions in the Matoran Universe, he went from Aqua Magna to Bara Magna to find and destroy Mata Nui. When Makuta arrived, Mata Nui tried to convince him to help him restore Spherus Magna, as this was their destiny, but Makuta refused to listen and only wanted to take over the outer space universe (I believe the Matoran Universe should have been called the Matoran "World" to avoid confusion), so Makuta attacked Mata Nui and his Bara Magna friends.
While Mata Nui and Makuta were fighting, Mata Nui's allies went to help him. They tried to distract Makuta while Gresh, who got new armor and weapons, went to find a hatch on Makuta's foot, so he could go destroy anything in Makuta's body. Many Rahkshi, most being a yellow type of Rahkshi called the Rahkshi of Heat Vision, and Skakdi, with the latter being led by a Skakdi warlord named Nektann, came out of the Matoran Universe and attacked Gresh's friends. Many heroes came out of the world to fight Makuta's minions and help Gresh's friends fight them, as Tahu and Takanuva made an alliance with Gresh after briefly confused each other as enemies. A group of Skrall, led by Stronius, went to help Makuta and his minions fight Mata Nui's Bara Magna friends in revenge of their defeat in the past story arc. The Mask of Light changed Tahu from a Toa Nuva to a Toa Mata because it wanted him to use the Golden Armor, which could be used to help him win the fight against Makuta. The Mask created the armor, but Makuta scattered the armor, and then his allies stole three of the armor's six pieces. Tahu, Takanuva, and Gresh went to retrieve the pieces. Gresh fought and defeated a group of Skrall. Takanuva fought and defeated two Rahkshi of Heat Vision, and Tahu fought and defeated Nektann. Meanwhile, Makuta was winning because his body was stronger than the prototype, and when Mata Nui aggravated him, he tried to use a gravity blast to destroy Bara Magna, but Mata Nui redirect the blast to Aqua Magna and Bota Magna, which acted as Bara Magna's moons, bringing them back to Bara Magna. Makuta tried to stomp on Mata Nui's allies. After Tahu retrieved all of the pieces of the Golden Armor, he put it on and used it to destroy all of the Rahkshi in the battlefield. This distracted and weakened Makuta, so Mata Nui used one of Bara Magna's moons to destroy him, ending his reign in the Matoran Universe. The other villains got defeated, too, so the heroes won the fight. After Spherus Magna was put back together, modt people of the Matoran Universe came out of there to migrate to Spherus Magna. Mata Nui used the last bit of the prototype's energy and the Mask of Life to change Spherus Magna back to the way it was before the Shattering. The prototype was destroyed because of this, but Mata Nui's spirit survived and went back inside the mask. He told all good people from the Mega-Village and the Matoran Universe to form a society together without relying on Mata Nui for now. Mata Nui went to sleep in the mask.
So, this ended the Bara Magna storyline (2009-2010). There are a few new adventures, where the people are trying to keep the peace, but a villainous Great Being, who pretended to be a Matoran named Velika, and many other menaces threaten the peace. This story has not continued since 2011.
The story arc had six sets, each representing a character from a story arc or some other character similar to it. They are all short, like the Av-Matoran and Agori. Each of them as one of the pieces of the Golden Armor, and you can put them on one of the sets, Tahu. You can also combine the sets to form Gaardus.
The story arc has 2-3 comics, a book called Journey's End, and an online story called Mata Nui Saga. There also three online story serials that went along with the story arc. One ended while the other two were not unfinished since 2011.
The story arc was promoted through an online game, which is a Tower-Defense-styled game called Agori Defender.
Originally, the story arc was going to be about Mata Nui and his friends traveling to the Valley of the Maze while encountering some people. There was also going to be a 2011 story arc. Both were going to have sets and two direct-to-video movies for them. In other words, Mata Nui's journey was going to be much longer (all of this according to Christian Faber's early story documents that Duck Bricks briefly revealed in YouTube). However, all of this got canceled because Bionicle's G1 toyline got canceled in 2010, sadly.
After the 2010 story arc, Hero Factory began. It was used to keep up Bionicle's legacy, as its sets in 2010 got the same pieces as Bionicle's G1 years (I look at HF as an honorary part of G1. There were plans about HF was more related to it). Then, Bionicle G2 happened in 2015. We got a remaster of the 2001 Tahu set in 2023.
In my opinion, the story arc is good, but not the best. It felt rushed. The sets are too short. Lol. I wish the two arm Golden Armor pieces and the chest Golden Armor piece were different. I wish the original plans for the 2010 and 2011 had happened. The year 2010 was a traumatic one because the G1 storyline got announced to be canceled in 2009, this broke my heart. I dearly hope that the G1 storyline will be re-continued, and we need to have Lego get Greg Farshtey back.
Anyway, happy 15th anniversary, 2010 story arc. I hope the guys at Bionicle Day will find behind-the-scenes stuff for the media used for it and the prototypes and concept art for the sets.
