Hi r/Edmonton!

City Councillor Ashley Salvador here. I’ve been rethinking how I engage online and looking for spaces that allow for more meaningful dialogue. That’s why I thought I’d finally introduce myself properly with an AMA.

Instead of just lurking on this account I made years ago, I’d love to answer your questions.

I’ll be here on Wednesday, January 29, from 4-7:30PM.

Feel free to ask questions below, and I’ll do my best to get to as many as I can.

See you soon!

Title

Driving to work on the Henday this morning, when a bunch of snow fell off someone’s vehicle onto the road. I hit it and did a 360 but managed to save it and keep going. Best driving of my life. If it was icier out, I would’ve been in the ditch or smashed into someone else.

Please for the love of god, take the couple minutes to wipe the snow off your vehicle before you start driving! You could kill someone.

Original Title: Just got physically attacked by a group of vagrant women at Century park after asking them to stop smoking and playing loud music. Our Transit system is basically owned by these scum and the city is blatantly letting it happen.

Of course since I'm a man I don't even feel like i'm allowed to defend myself against them and I got punched at least 20 times without returning a single one while they threatened to call their boys to come kill me. I'm sick and tired of these losers taking over the entire station and burning garbage, leaving needles behind and smoking the place up with illicit drugs. They smoke off of tinfoil sheets in the open and INSIDE the building. They immediately become violent if anyone confronts them, the security have absolutely 0 effect on them since they can't physically handle them. I'm fucking tired of feeling like a hostage in my own city and I'm sick and tired of being exposed to meth and fentanyl and crack and heroin on my commute.

Does anyone actually feel safe taking the train in this city? I can't imagine being an elder woman and having to commute. I think we might actually need a group of volunteers that will put themselves at risk to keep these people off the premises. I am considering myself to frequent Century park station with an air horn and clear them out whenever I see them.

I'm absolutely ashamed as an Edmontonian that we roll over and let our space be taken by criminals. The people that frequent the transit stations as drug dens and party houses ARE NOT the unfortunate, homeless drug addicts that need compassion. They are people with homes on the North Side that CHOOSE our clean and open space as a community center for fucking loser scum.

Face it. Who doesn't miss Canadian Radio Icon Stuart McLean?

If you didn't already know, Jess Milton, Stuart's long suffering producer has rebooted the Vinyl Café. Sort of.

Each week she digs up some vintage Dave, Morly and the gang and adds a story or two of her own about life with Stuart McLean. You can find episodes wherever you go for your casts. Or maybe the CBC Listen App.

This episode, season 5 (yeah. Already 5 seasons) episode 3, she talks about their tour stops in Alberta and she spends a few minutes talking about Edmonton.

If you were ever a Vinyl Café fan, you owe it to yourself to have a listen.

For Jess, if she ever sees this... Thanks buddy. We're really happy you're doing what you are with that amazing library.

Just got an email saying the Southpoint store (next to Breathe and PetSmart) is closing Feb. 22. They have a "special closing sale" starting Feb. 4 with an extra 25% off all general merchandise* and 50% off bargain books.

They added: "We are always looking for new location opportunities and ideas to better serve our customers in their local stores. We would greatly appreciate your feedback! Please take a moment to complete this brief survey. We will host a virtual town hall for anyone interested, and you can sign up through the survey."

During a power outage or whenever traffic lights are not working. You need to treat the intersection like a four way stop.

The amount of drivers not coming to a complete stop or giving the right of way to other drivers is ridiculous. I am baffled by how many drivers are not paying attention or ignorant of procedures.

It’s happening. No updated articles are out yet so this old one is the best I can find for now. Safeway has sent memos to the stores saying that wages are being rolled back 6.5% and that they will be collecting the “overpayment” from August 2023-October 2024

Just caught the tail end of a woman being attacked by a dog. Luckily there was already a handful of people there to help. It looked like the dog tore up her hands pretty bad and there was quite a bit of blood all over the ground. The owner of the dog stuck around at least while they were waiting for police and an ambulance.

I did initially see another dog there but the owner of that one was yelling at the other and then took off running. The dog that was still there had blood all over its face and neck from the attack.

I made a couple posts pre-trip and you all were very kind and helpful.

We live in GA, USA. My son chose to go to Edmonton for a birthday father-son trip. He wanted to see a different country, an NHL game, and experience real cold.

Well, the cold didn't work out, lol. It was literally colder in GA, lol. Crazy weather.

As for a different country... it's not so different, eh. I will say that I was struck how kind people really are here. There is a difference and it's nice.

The Oilers game... McDavid got himself suspended for being bad so we didn't get to see him. Oh well, it was a great game. The crowd was amazing. The thing that really stood out was the Canadian Anthem. Honestly, I thought it was lame compared our banger anthem. Well, hearing the whole stadium sing it, you could hear the love for Canada... it was awe inspiring. My son is a lacrosse goalie so he got a Skinner jersey. I have heard he's not super popular but he put on a show that night, he played amazing. It was perfect! The game is definitely something he'll remember forever.

The food... WOW. Everywhere we ate was awesome. I don't want to call out specific places because they were all great and I feel like the whole city just has great food. So many choices and everyone was so cool with us.

Snowboarding... my son's first time may have started a habit I don't know how to support in GA, lol. It was warm (0 C) so we didn't bother buying gear. We did a full day in blue jeans and hoodies, lol. The hills weren't amazing but it was honestly perfect for beginners. It was very affordable and convenient. Great time.

Bowling... Canadian bowling is different! Had no idea, we just figured it out here and had to try it. Honestly, you can keep this one but it was fun to try!

The city... Fantastic. So easy to navigate. Nobody ever seems in a rush, I never got honked at or cutoff. The ice district is awesome. So many museums and different things to do within a short distance.

When I first posted about this trip, some people thought it was a bad idea. They couldn't have been more wrong. Edmonton will be a special place for both of us and we'll wear our Edmonton/Oilers gear with pride back home.
