Apps like WeChat are able to deliver push notifications there, though some other apps have problems.

I was generally wondering if there are any lesser known, yet great foss apps? Maybe something you discovered on your own? (any category)

Why are there two Version 0.25.1-s on F-droid?

One is this:

The other is this:

The latter's SHA-256 hash matches with this APK from their Github repository:

What is the first one? It's source, though available on F-droid, has not been published on Github. What is it? Malware?

Even more suspicious is the fact that the source of the latter APK is given as:

This leads to a 404 page.

Hi there, I am just setting up a grapheneOS pixel 6a and was wondering if anyone has some FOSS recommendations for the following requirements:

  • a widget that displays the time and also the weather (at current location or predefined location)
  • a widget that shows today's screentime per app (on one plus, there is an app called digital wellbeing which does this)
  • a widget to instantly mute the phone (basically like the physical slider on one plus phones)

Ill start; monocles (been utterly fascinated with this one lately lol) chromium (I know I know it's a well known desktop browser but you don't really see people discuss the mobile equivalent) .

So yeah, let's see some obscure shit!

As much as I can't fucking stand google, I love the way the file browser is, atleast on the pixel 4a 5G my current phone. Any file manager with a similar look and feel to it?

So, the monocles browser , also alot of their products (all FOSS) are on fdroid. They have a search engine "monocles.de" I'm wondering if anyone knows much about them? They have they're own phone they're selling as long as an OS. I've searched wide and far and can't find any instance of anyone owning one.. I fuck with the search engine heavy as it displays results flawlessly and doesn't time out like the others constantly with google search etc. But the lack of people mentioning them and the obscurity makes me think its some kind of honeypot. Thoughts?

I am looking for a safe and preferably Opensource/FOSS app for my Pictures.Want to make a Safe n Secure Picture Library Online, even if it has less features than Google Photos.Dont want any AI models being trained on my pics(without my knowledge and permission). Came upon Piwigo which claims to be opensource n selfhosted but I am not knowledgeable enough about selfhosting.Any Suggestions are welcome. Edit: Seems like Self hosting isnt my cup of Tea and I won't be able to do that.Still, some good suggestions should exist that are FOSS or at least OpenSource.

I found it is possible with an app called Super status bar. But it is proprietary and has a lot of extra functionalities which to someone who only needs this, that seems just too much and a resource hog. Is there aFOSS app for this that anyone here is aware of?

why does FOSS exist? why did people make foss (free and open source software) why would thousands of extremely highly technically educated code engineers dedicate hundreds if not thousands of hours of their most valuable resource (time) into something like FOSS for free, when they could be spending that very same time making a tremendous amount of money with their highly specialized skill set? why did people decide to make foss software?

don't get me wrong i love foss, i just want to understand it better,

thank you

I was using /e/OS. It's a great de-geoogle rom. It has a built-in feature to block all trackers from app. But I have changed my ROM and I want the /e/OS like feature that blocks all app trackers in the background. Is there any foss app like this that can block all trackers?

So I am trying to find an open source alternative to Fudget/Fudget 2 with about the same features. After trying it out this morning and going through the tutorial, it felt like the perfect app for how I want to do my budgeting for my paydays and track expenses on my own. It was all good until I was forced to a login screen that I can't avoid and stops me from using the app completely until I login or make an account. Neither of which I want to do. So here is the features that I have tried out so far that I hope to find in another app:

  • Create a budget for the month
  • add income individually
  • add expenses individually
  • shows total saved or if I go over budget

Some feature(s) that I didn't use, but is included in the app:

  • export to CSV/spreadsheet formats

Some feature(s) that I would like to be included:

  • backup to local disk as a separate file
  • no account needing to be made or anything needing to be connected in order for it to work
  • everything done locally on my phone

So far, I haven't tried anything yet as of now, as I have only tried it this morning before work and I don't have that much time to use any apps until after work. But any suggestions appreciated for apps.

TL:DR: a simple budget tracker either similar or 1:1 with Fudget, because I hate making accounts for something that could have been kept local. Not looking for anything complicated. Just simple financial balance tracking that I can input numbers into.

Edit: tried openmoneybox a little bit, but it seems very cumbersome and the quality of it just doesn't seem good at all.

  1. Hibernates apps that are not in use (with support for disabling wifi background data)
  2. turns wifi off when devices sleeps and turns on upon wake
  3. minimized background tasks while device is sleeping what are my options? I have come across Freezeyou, batterytool but haven't tried them yet. device is not rooted Please share your suggestions and thoughts. Thanks

AI-generated images and art are du jour. There are many websites, webapps, and native applications for creating interesting eidetic material using artificial intelligence. Some of the websites and webapps are free; others require payment, but almost all of them utilize tracking mechanisms either on the front end or server-side, or both. The native applications are mostly proprietary spyware.

The good news is that there are two freedomware tools (on default F-Droid) to use for AI image generation. They leverage Stable Diffusion's technology.

Stable Diffusion is simply a website for generating AI images or art by inputting prompts or parameters.

Open Stable Diffusion is an app for creating images via Stable Diffusion. Simply input your desired parameters and enjoy the output.

If you prefer to use Stable Diffusion with your own server, SDAI FOSS is an application for generating assets on your own Stable Diffusion WebUI instance. It is a rather large app.

On a related topic, if you want to chat with a certain famous LLM chatbot without resorting to proprietary apps or a web browser, gptAssist is here for you. It is a minimalist wrapper for the ChatGPT website. It's important to ensure that your device's WebView implementation is updated to a recent version to be able to use this app.

Have a special autumnal weekend!

Gmail has "Important" labels that it applies... automatically, magically, I don't quite know how. In the Gmail app and website, the "Priority Inbox" filters for only important-marked emails, effectively hiding most spam. "Important" is not a Label in the same way users can create and apply labels to sort emails, though. Is filtering for the "Important" marker something that FairEmail supports? (In other words, does FairEmail have a version of the Priority Inbox for synced Gmail accounts?)

Hiya dear Fossdroid!

I very often have to print out things from my Android phone.

Most often emails, sometimes webpages!

Nearly all of the time I "print" them to a PDF file, using Androids build-in print dialogue, and save the file to a folder on my phone.

Sometimes I then also actually physically print it out after that. But that is secondary...

Now the issue is, that if you print out e.g. emails from different email apps on Android, first of all they all look different, depending from which email-app you're 'printing' the PDF from, and more importantly:

IT LOOKS HORRIBLE!

All the text is only e.g. on the right 50% of the page and the other half of all pages is blank. Or it is way too large or way too small! Or the page-breaks and layout of text are terrible and email threads/quotes are nearly impossible to print out correctly etc...

And apart from the really bad looking and space-wasting part itself, which is definitely more important (!), obviously there also are no extra 'features' either...

Such as selecting what to print and what NOT to!

E.g. NOT printing out email headers (from: xxx and to: xxx and subject line or the stupid email client logo on top etc.) or not printing out certain embedded pictures or huge email bottom 'signatures' of email partners etc.

I think anyone who has ever tried to print an email, or worse even: email thread, from Android might hopefully maybe know what I mean?

When you get a 16-page PDF document out of an email, that space-saving wise could easily have been like 6-7 pages. And which has terrible 'pagination' (where to 'break' the text onto the next page...) and terrible general text-layout and additionally is full of spam you didn't actually wanted to include/would really like to strip out...

Lot of words there, I'm sorry!

Long story short, there are options for laptops! Mainly Chrome extensions, such as "PrintFriendly" or as better FOSS option: "The Printliminator" that work great for exactly this:

'Printing' an email or any webpage as PDF: Optimized, pretty and 'stripping-out' any unwanted items!

And basically that is what I'm desperately looking for in Android!

E.g. an (ideally FOSS of course..) app for Android, which allows that you, click anywhere in Android on 'share' and in the share-menue you just select the said app and then it turns whatever content you shared into a pretty, opimized, print-out ready PDF to save!

That way you could just 'print' an incredible non-space-wasting PDF from ANY email app or browser in Android!

Is anything like that possible or existing? Or is that highly specific day dreaming from me?

Or is there any way, to turn/fork the already amazing and FOSS "The Printliminator" () to an Android app or anything the like?

Thank you soo soo much already for any and all help!

And hopefully/maybe I am not the only one with this (highly specific..) problem?

tl;dr: Android app (FOSS?) to optimize or "better" print out to PDFs from e.g. emails or webpages!

Like the title says. Yes I'm aware of DAVx5. But there's calendar apps supporting CalDAV directly (e.g. Etar), so is there a contacts app that can directly sync via CardDAV?
