In the next week or two, kglitch.social will be shutting down, to free up server resources for https://piefed.social, a new kbin/lemmy alternative written in Python.

PieFed is currently pretty new and needs people to use it a bit, to make all the bugs show themselves. Please jump in and let me know what you find!

I'm currently building an open source Kbin/Lemmy clone that will eventually replace the Kbin software at kglitch.social. It is still in very early stages of development so I expect the current Kbin setup will continue unchanged for about another 6 months. Maybe longer. There is no need to immediately move.

The new system is written in Python, using the Flask framework and a MySQL/PostgreSQL database. It's code is simple and clean with few dependencies making it easy to deploy and maintain. The code will be accessible enough to new and intermediate developers that they can contribute productively with only a small familiarization effort.

The UI design draws inspiration from old.reddit, current reddit, kbin and lemmy, in that order. The issues around onboarding and discoverability are top of mind.

Rather than aiming for massive scale and cloud deployment (and all the complexity and cathedral code that come with that) it will be for small to medium servers. This will help keep the system simple and friendly.

The codebase is still too young for others to get involved - I'm still laying the foundations that will set the tone for how to proceed. Once it starts to become more real I'll share more about it.

For example, I just tried to go to https://kglitch.social/m/[email protected] to subscribe to it, but it shows a 404. At least https://kglitch.social/d/midwest.social worked, but https://kglitch.social/d/compuverse.uk doesn't (nor does https://kglitch.social/m/[email protected])

Hey there, fellow travellers!

I am thrilled to welcome each and every one of you to our small community. This "Introductions" thread is the perfect place to break the ice, share a bit about yourself, and get to know your fellow community members.

To kick things off, I'll start by introducing myself:

Name: kglitch
Location: New Zealand
Interests: computer things - linux, programming, webdev. Nature, Photography, Travel, History.
Favorite thing about this community: Being able to knock some of the rough edges of stock kbin

Now it's your turn! Don't be shy—feel free to share as much or as little about yourself as you're comfortable with. Here are a few ideas to get you started, but feel free to deviate from them if you'd like:

Name or Username: [Your preferred name or online handle]
Location: [Where you're from, or the place you currently call home]
Interests: [Tell us about your hobbies, activities, or any unique talents]
What brings you to this instance?
Anything else you'd like to share:

If you're not comfortable sharing personal information, that's perfectly fine. You can still participate by engaging with others, asking questions, or simply offering a warm welcome to newcomers. The goal is to build a strong and supportive community where everyone feels valued.

So, without further ado, let the introductions begin! I can't wait to get to know each and every one of you and see this thread come alive with our diverse and fascinating community.

Welcome aboard, and enjoy your time here!

Best regards,

KGlitch admin
