[My Personal Opinion, it's fine if you disagree]

I recall the disappointment of the 40 series for it's sheer cost coming out of the Pandemic. But at least the hardware had actually evolved with that generation, it wasn't as big of a jump in performance as 30 series but it was a good leap forward, it's just it's high costs holding it back. [Also lack of Display Port 2.0 or 2.1, Only 1.4]

But I think I'm more disappointed with the 50 Series, It reminds me a little of intels 14nm issue, while stuck on that process pushed core count and transistor density up at the cost of high energy usage & rising heat.

While Nvidia isn't stuck like intel we are on the same nm process as Ada Lovelace, and while they have evolved their RT and Tensor Cores to 4th and 5th Generation, they've done nothing to actually improve the Cuda Cores in performance per core nor efficiency for 50 series, so they just try to stuff more instead.

But More doesn't mean better, and you can see that with the Reviews coming in for the 5080. It's like a 10-15% Improvement over the 4080 and I'm guessing less with the 4080 Super. So we end up with just a GPU Generation of lackluster technological performance but Impressive [alas flawed] software & AI performance at the cost of a much higher power draw and about 10*C increase in Temps.

I was actually considering to upgrade after seeing the Reviews of the 5090 and so was looking forward to seeing what the 5080 Could offer.... but if that's all it can do then the 5070's and 60's are gonna be rough, Since latency of Multi Frame Gen is tied to the Original Real Frame Created any of the latest games on the 70 or 60 lineup running at about 30-50 FPS is gonna feel so gross when wacked up to 100+ by MFG.

I will just wait to see what the next 2-3 Years will bring. AMD and Intel hopefully can take advantage during that time and launch some impressive cards maybe.

At the very least I'm now gonna wait to see what the 60 Series looks like as by then it will be on a smaller process with the hope that those cards won't be as power hungry as the 50 Series, nor as lackluster in Raw Performance. [And we'll just see what they've done to Improve DLSS and MFG as well.]

The new MeganeX Superlight 8k VR headset has a resolution of 3552 x 3840 per eye (7104 x 3840 pixels for both eyes), before any sort of supersampling. It's not just this specific headset, but the 1.35 inch Micro OLED / 10 bit panel will be an extremely popular option in all available headsets coming out in 2025.

Don't worry though, benchmarking these will not only apply to VR as I explain below.

One of the more popular uses for VR at the moment is modding games like Cyberpunk 2077, or using the UEVR injector for some of the games LTT benchmarks. Since headsets containing this panel are coming out this year, I personally think it would benefit the consumer highly to know what the differences between the 4090 and 5090 would be in this ultra high pixel resolution at 90hz.

What makes the UEVR injector so interesting is it's made to inject VR into all unreal engine games in the exact same way, meaning performance differences between flat and VR shouldn't vary depending on the game (because each game isn't being done by a different modder and thus the code and performance impact is similar across the board).

Here's a list of counterpoints you may have and my responses to them.

But VR is still niche why would I want to know that?

It's not about VR performance. It's about stretching the card to it's absolute limit. LTT used 4k as a benchmark resolution back when 4k panels were $2,000. It's about creating situations that really differentiate cards, which I feel like 4k doesn't do as good of a job with anymore (and 8k monitors don't really add much clarity, which is why it makes less sense to use them). The VR performance should be of interest to even people who hate using VR directly, because the results have interesting things to say about the hardware itself even for gamers that aren't ever going to use VR.

How will these benchmarks affect my purchasing decisions?

Knowing how each card does in a VR mod (like UEVR or the Luke Ross mods to things like Cyberpunk) using these extremely high resolutions would help with predicting how the cards will age in future titles/games. For example, comparing the same game pancake benchmarks to the VR modded version would give interesting insight on how both cards might perform similarly today, but when playing games that use higher resolution textures in the future, they might stand out from each other. It's not a perfect 1:1 scale between say display resolution and texture resolution, but it still gives the user interesting insight on pushing the cards to their vram limits, and how doing so affects the compute capabilities of each card.

These headsets aren't out yet. How would LTT even do this?

For one, I think at least one of the companies showcasing that new micro OLED panel at CES would have a unit that they could send LTT for early access. Alternatively, LTT could supersample a Bigscreen Beyond to get a very similar resolution to the new micro oled panels coming out.

I would imagine the audience of people buying the new expensive VR headsets will overlap with the people buying $2k GPUs, and give the audience a unique insight on the performance differences gen/gen at an almost 8k 90hz resolution, using an application that actually benefits from the extreme resolution uplift.

With the new 50 series Nvidia cards being disappointing at best and deceptive marketing at worst, I think it's a great time to make as many consumers aware of LSFG as possible. In short, it's a platform-agnostic software that brings upscaling and frame gen to basically any GPU. It's been out for a few years now scaling from 2x, 3x to now 20X FRAME GEN. I unfortunately cannot test this claim because realistically I would need a game running at 20 fps on a 400+ Hz monitor.

I can tell you my experience with the 2060 Super though, for what it is and how much it costs, (AROUND 6-7$ US), it does a fantastic job, especially on 2x, with extremely little to slightly noticeable artifacts, not anything significantly worse than DLSS FG.

With Nvidia basically expecting people to buy their cards for the Multi-Frame Gen and RT benefits, I think it's really important for the larger audience to know about this software.

LSFG Features :

-2x, 3x ...... 20x frame gen

-Multiple Upscaling options

-Completely platform agnostic (Works on any card as far as I understand)

-Completely game agnostic, it works as an final layer to your Display's output. It doesn't matter if the game has DLSS FG or any frame-gen support or not. It will work. In that sense, it is almost better than Nvidia's tech as it works on any output, whether it be video or a game. With basically complete backwards compatibility.

Downsides:

-Latency, is noticeable, and for latency-sensitive people, this will be a deal breaker. (This can be somewhat corrected with Nvidia Reflex or AMD's equivalent)

-It will probably never be as good to be a Replacement for a native FSR 4 OR DLSS FG Replacement.

My argument for the latency side of things is that the requirement of FG is probably a lot more for super visually heavy and narrative single-player games, where latency takes a backstep vs competitive/e-sports titles where most GPUs should do well enough anyway.

Hoping this post reaches the attention of LTT. It's a great software that genuinely prolongs your GPU's longevity, allows people to revisit any game/video at better frame rates and genuinely undermines the value proposition for people on 40 series or even 30 series cards.

I will link the Steam page for the same below, I encourage you to check out any videos covering this, try to look for as recent as possible to get the best visual idea.

TLDR: LSFG (Lossless Scaling Frame Gen) is a really good software that brings frame gen to any game and works with any GPU, it's cheap, and people should check it out. Especially those looking to buy into the new-gen cards from Nvidia & AMD.

I've been following LMG channels for a couple of years now, and Channel Super Fun while being weird and odd, was pretty cool in my mind, and didn't like that they stopped posting to it. I recall Linus mentioning that they're trying to find another outlet for Dennis' creativity. It seems like they've found it. The new sponsor blocks with Dennis are SO fun! I find myself actually watching through them since they are engaging and I'm thinking "lemme see what Dennis has cooked up this time". Renting Linus' car for instance, so dumb and fun, and keeps the sponsor's name in mind: Odoo! Keep it going guys, and thanks for letting Dennis find his niche and continue with his creativity.

I left LMG - What do I do now?

Hey r/LinusTechTips - Remember me? I've been gone for a while, but I haven't been idle. I'm reaching out to you guys specifically because you were a huge support for me while I was at Linus Media Group, and you've been so interested in what I've been up to since leaving.

I spent the time away gearing up and prepping for doing my own content, and now I'm finally pulling the trigger. I've had to learn a lot of things along the way, like camera operation, lighting, framing, composition, editing, and a whole lot of backend stuff that makes everything tick that I've never had to deal with before. I still don't feel like I'm ready for this, but I can't sit on it forever.

So I wanted to share this with you directly, and I wanted to thank everyone who's supported me over the years - not just since coming out. The fact that you still care is huge to me, and I'll do my best to keep doing the kind of work you've come to expect from me over the years.

The most important part of this whole exercise for me is that tech should be for everyone; I want to keep an open mind to people who are less experienced or knowledgeable. Reach out to them and help lift them up - Don't push them away. If you want to come with me on my journey and become an "expert" like me, then you're welcome to follow!
