Murder By Death

This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite #bands. I can't believe they're retiring from touring this year... I tried to see them every time they came in the area. I remember 100% not being into this type of music and them opening for the post-hardcore band Thursday. I remember small murmurs happening as they walked on stage with a #cello. I remember everyone's jaw being on the floor by the end of their set and their merch line being overwhelmed by a bunch of scene kids tasting something new. They are one of the many reasons I discovered other genres. Namely #postrock - for that alone I'll be eternally grateful.

As for this song... man, such a lovely track... dark and romantic - and a so catchy. I wish i had more to say, but it just leaves me with an odd feeling. Like not really nostalgic, but in a similar vein. Just feels warming. I hope this is played at my #funeral The video is rare in that it truly adds to the track. Adds to the dark tale of love. If you haven't already, please check this band out as they're on their farewell tour. They never fail to impress both in their discography and their performance. The have an entire album dedicated to the devil dying in a bar fight. Their discography does not miss... I cannot think of a single song by them that I don't enjoy. This has a lot to do with the band's passion for music... it's probably incredible hard to find now... But they did a split for Volta do Mar (not the mars volta lol) where it's just like 15 seconds of them shooting the shit about how people don't really care about music. That stuck with me... mostly due to how clear how much they put into their releases. I hope theirs music in the future, and even if there isn't -

Thank you Murder By Death! You left us so many good albums and songs to enjoy... and covers! Their Creep by TLC is something to behold.

I look forward seeing them this summer and being thrown back to that time being a awestruck high schooler

Interesting variant that's pretty different from the typical "Angeline The Baker". Source is Charlie Higgins

first new table freestyle in a minute and the boys don't miss! one of the things that i feel like people sleep on is their approach to drops. like they make you hungry for a new freestyle. like i get that they're obviously prewritten in most cases, but the small things they do to get your attention is appreciated. Like the coordinated moves they did in this one... dunno just takes shit to the next level.

Macklemore’s support of Palestine goes back to at least his time in college - this song is far from performative. Much love to him for releasing this and continuing to speak on Palestine.

Nice twin fiddle arrangement from the Shoats at a house concert. Not sure if an original tune or what. The whole playlist is a good listen.

In Japan they have a couple of very cool J-Rock bands like Polkadot Stingray, FREDERIK, KANA BOON or Band Maid.

I just found another one: NECRY TALKIE.

Feather+Flask opened for the Dustbowl Revival this past Thursday at the Elkton Music Hall in Elkton, MD. They are a new band with extremely talented musicians, amazing energy, and beautiful harmonies. They kind of remind me of Rusted Root with better vocals and they really deserve a lot of listens!

This is in addition to bandcamp, which AFAIK is unsurpassed in its awesomeness.

For less niche stuff, I've used 7 digital and Qobuz in the past; both have screwed me over by either making it very difficult to download my purchases, or else charging me for an entire album before revealing (in a light grey font on a white background) that 60% of the tracks can only be streamed but not downloaded due to rights issues. I don't think amazon's ever sold FLAC, and even if they did, I would never buy anything from them. And I'm not willing to use Spotify since it screws its artists over so badly.

So, with all those various conditions laid down, is there anything left that anyone would recommend? Getting CDs from the library and ripping them works too, but depending on the album, it can take so long for it to arrive through interlibrary loan that by the time I get it, I've moved on to other things!

The flag at the start is a bit anachronistic as Howard Zinn would not write this quote until 21 years after this song was written. However, I like the quote a lot, and I consider it fitting for an anti-war song.

"British War" refers to the War of 1812. In other recordings, he sings "British wars."

"Injun" is an old slur for Native Americans; "Little Bighorn" refers to the Battle of the Little Bighorn (Battle of the Greasy Grass), where Native forces successfully repelled a colonizer army led by George Armstrong Custer.

"United Fruit" refers to the United Fruit Company, a multinational corporation that participated, at the behest of the United States, in economic imperialism against much of Latin America, devastating these lands and turning them into effective puppet states of the US, with heavy economic inequality, poverty, and other such miseries. In 1960, they were accused by Fidel Castro of aiding Cuban exiles in an eventual plan to invade Cuba, which happened at the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion.

"I ain't marching anymore" is a 1965 anti-war protest song by the American singer-songwriter Phil Ochs. He initially released it on his second album, the song's namesake, as a protest to the ongoing Vietnam War (of which he was a very passionate critic). Like many of his other songs, it was treated with suspicion by the US government, and seldom played on the radio (a factor that vindicated its purpose for him), though it was popular among the anti-war movement in the 60s, with Ochs even performing it outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention, provoking hundreds to burn their draft cards. After Phil Ochs died, it was revealed that the FBI had nearly 500 pages on him.

This recording is an electronic remix released in 1966 as a single accompanied by The Blues Project, but was rather unpopular compared to the original acoustic version. I decided to use it because, though I do prefer the acoustic version, this one felt more conducive to uploading.
