It's just baffling how GGG couldn't even afford to put a single dev on PoE 1. They have done plenty of events in the past, it should'nt be a big task to just rehash some event and give us atleast a bit of fresh air while we wait another x months for 3.26.

If a company has a product that is profitable there is no reason to stop making that product unless it is directly cannibalizing a competing product they offer. Considering how devoted most fans are I can't imagine there'd be a negative impact on hype/supporter packs with even 6 weeks between PoE1/PoE2 launches. On the labor side forget sharing devs between the games. There is an opportunity cost for any senior developer not focusing all their energy on the latest offering.

But you have a fully baked IP sitting on the sidelines earning nothing in supporter packs atm. If you really strip down what a minimum viable product for new leagues could look like there is a TREASURE TROVE of past league assets that could be repurposed into new leagues alongside skill balance tweaks:

  • Talisman
  • Synthesis
  • Metamorph
  • Scourge
  • Kalandra
  • Crucible
  • ToTa
  • Affliction

Even a skeleton crew of 10 team members (PM, tech lead, buncha mid/junior devs, and a couple testers) could come up with MINIMAL tweaks to past league mechanics to give them a facelift without any major reworks. With a fresh meta to revisit these old systems I think they'd actually be quite fun. If we could mod the game this would already exist with a shoestring budget.

For the sake of argument lets say it'll take the skeleton crew 6 months to produce a new league and do some basic testing. This is truly a worst case scenario since we're talking about reusing old assets here. No new voice acting, item art, animations, game systems, etc. Screw any marketing outside of a reveal livestream. Youtubers/Twitch will literally advertise the league for you with such a strong IP. For a round number let's say each league costs $1M USD in labor + server costs. Are we supposed to believe that 300k players (VERY conservative estimate) coming back to PoE for a new league can't bring in more revenue than $1M? There's probably over 1000 whales who will buy $160+ supporter packs. Another 10000 at least would gladly drop $30 for existing cosmetics knowing it'll keep their favorite game alive. We're already halfway to profit before factoring in the other 289k players...

The only reasons I can think of are:

  1. GGG straight up does not like the game that PoE1 has become. To them it has gone too far off the rails in terms of power creep, and it strayed so far from their original vision that they'd rather see it put down than continue to give fans more content. This is odd though since PoE2 endgame is every bit as "single skill screen clear" as PoE1
  2. GGG has such high standards for their league launches that they can't fathom having PoE1 be in maintenance mode even if the vastly decreased dev effort could lead to more profit for them. But that doesn't make sense since Necro Settlers was the most half-assed league reset I can ever remember, so they are willing to do it when necessary

Vert strange times we live it, but I just can't understand the math behind punting such a valuable IP that is still in its prime (concurrent player record with Settlers).

B4 PoE 2 released they said the game would prolly be EA from 6 to 12 months. I said to myself not knowing shit "no way 6 months but I can see 12 months". Now that we seen the absolute mess that is poe 2 "endgame", that shit ain't ready for another 1 to 3 years for sure.

Now that should be all the reason you need to keep your veterans and cows/whales happy with poe 1 leagues in the meantime. Ah yes you got your 30bucks EA keys for the masses, but us Degens will drop 30-300+ every 3 months without even you asking and even with a warchest full of Mtx.

If we get no poe, and half-ass poe 2 for another 24 months you'll loose us god damn.

A few weeks ago, we realised we had a problem. The Flashback events would be ending on the 2nd of November but there would still be five weeks after that until the next challenge leagues could be released.

Since all our developers are busy working on future content, there would have to be a gap where Standard and Hardcore would be the only leagues running. We weren't really happy with that.

Back in the good old days of Closed Beta when both the company size and player expectations were smaller, we used to be able to throw together some content and have players testing it in a short amount of time.

So I decided to see what I could throw together. Could I put together a fun league entirely by myself in a week?

Everytime GGG advertised a new supporter pack Chris said "thank you for supporting the continued development of Path of Exile" meanwhile all the money was being funneled into PoE 2 which is not the game i was supporting, this is MISLEADING!

i want my money back, i didn't spend 3000$ on an abandoned game which was advertised as "Designed to be played Forever".

This is what I see GGG doing in the future, its not viable for them to support 2 games at once and they cannot do it as shown by how they treated PoE 1 development.

They will slow down development for PoE 1 until its playerbase migrates to PoE 2 or leaves the game entirely so that there will be no backlash when they inevitably stop working on PoE 1. Even if they do keep it alive and on live support it probably means that the expanions that PoE 1 gets will be low quality and simple leagues. Think of Crucible, Sentinel, etc, we probably won't get another high quality league like Settlers for the duration of PoE 1
