I want some links to community posts in my community sidebar (e.g. to posting guidelines, resources etc) but which people can interact with even if they're on a different instance, i.e. comment, vote, etc.

At the moment, I link to the same page twice in two different ways:

How should I do it?

(This isn't necessarily a PieFed issue, more an entire Fediverse issue. I'm still not 100% clear how to link to Fediverse content in a way that a Fediverse member can actually use.)

Do all mods have equal power over a community? Or is there a "supermod" / "owner" / "creator" who has more power than the others?

E.g. if I make someone else a mod of a community I created, can they do everything I can? Even remove me as a mod?

Issues with stickies (piefed.social)
submitted 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

In my community [email protected] , I've made two posts sticky (the "Welcome" post and the "Free, legal movies" post) using my Piefed mod account, but:

  • viewing in PieFed, neither post is at the top. (They do have inverted angle brackets around the title.)
  • viewing in Lemmy, The "Free, legal movies" post is sticky (at top, with pushpin icon) but the "Welcome" post isn't.

How do I get them both displayed at the top in both PieFed and Lemmy? Or is this a bug?

Hi all, I am trying out scheduling posts with my account. I can set them up initially but then when I review them, they're set to a much later time. I assume that's a time zone issue? For example, I set a post for 6:00am in the ui, saved. On review, it says 10:00am.

Can someone please explain how this should work?

I love having the feature though, so thank you to whoever created it!

I would like to crosspost this https://piefed.social/post/993050 to https://piefed.social/c/afrikaans

But I don't see the option to do so, I've noticed the crosspost button is sometimes there and other times not.

A new community has been created on:
https://sh.itjust.works/c/saltycaramelapple

On the original instance, there are plenty of comments on every post.

But on PieFed there are none:
https://piefed.social/c/[email protected]

Is there any way to retrieve the comments so they can show up on PieFed?

I created a new community on PieFed ( [email protected] ) and tried using https://lemmy-federate.com/ to get federated across other instances, but get an "instance is not registered" error.

Apparently, there are... issues?
https://lemmy.ca/post/45479147

So wondering about other ways to get federated.

  1. Can I do it myself, at least for the one other instance where I have an account (lemmy.ca)?
To me, at the moment it seems a bit 'chicken and egg'. I can't see it on lemmy.ca, so I can't subscribe to it from lemmy.ca. And lemmy.ca won't federate it until I subscribe to it. I must have it wrong.

  2. Promo communities: I know about those, but I don't want to use them just yet. This is a "soft launch" until I get more familiar with having a community and get some more content into it.

  3. Other ways?

Thanks.

I'm trying out starting a new community.

I wanted to crosspost some posts I already made elsewhere, e.g. https://piefed.social/post/984528 / https://lemmy.ca/post/46999890

But there's no crosspost button.

  1. Is there a way to do it?
  2. And I'm curious: why is there no crosspost button for so many posts?

So-- I would love nothing better than to host every image on Imgur and call it a day, except that Imgur is just *lol* with that business. I.e., in some cases, I have stuff that's been there for ~10yrs with no issue, and then there's a bunch of other stuff that routinely gets deleted after 3-4mos or so.

Not trying to ramble here, but my concern is that I don't want to weigh down our host, and instead want to find the 'right pocket,' i.e. a good-size image file that let's me show off our image content, but isn't a burden upon our host.

Plus of course, sometimes showing off a certain series requires ~10 images or so, meaning the image-serving requirements are 10x the nominal requirement.

In cases like that, I have no problem uploading such content to Imgur, even if it's not going to last long, but... I kinda want to figure out how I should handle these things, if that makes sense...

Thank you for any and all advice.

E.g. https://piefed.social/post/977961

The post is on [email protected].

Comments (at time of writing) are divided into sections.

  1. One with no heading

  2. Heading "Comments in [email protected]"

Aren't all the comments on [email protected]? Why two sections?

EDIT

https://piefed.social/u/[email protected] explained: the recent post is a repost of a link first posted months ago. So the comment sections are:

  1. Comments on latest post

  2. Comment from the first time that link was posted

Thanks!

Testing and wondering about spoiler formatting and code formatting in posting and commenting on PieFed.

All of the below was written based on trying things out and seeing what it looks like in the Preview window . But experience has shown me that the Preview window isn't always the same as the final result, e.g. the block quote function does not display in the Preview window but does work in the final result.

So please excuse me if any of points 1-6 do not jibe with the final results shown after I click the "Publish" button.

1. Spoiler 1

Ah, so I can do a spoiler on PieFed. (I've gone back to Lemmy when I wanted to do some posts that needed spoiler protection.) Just not with a GUI button, but by inserting the relevant Markdown codes manually at the start and at the end of what you want to hide.

spoiler
SPOILER 1

Great! It works. :)

2. Showing code for Spoiler 1: Code Block

spoiler SPOILER 1

But I see that I can't just show you the codes using the Code Block button.

Code Block formatting for the spoiler element code does not show the code, instead it just gives the functional spoiler element in a monospaced font :D

3. Showing code for Spoiler 1: Single Line Code

Single Line Code, both via the GUI button and manually using the backtick key on the keyboard, turns the entire remainder of my post after the first spoiler into an active spoiler element instead of just showing the three lines as code.

But Single Line Code for those three lines does work if I don't have the word spoiler twice in the first line (like the actual manual code for Spoiler 1 has, where the second spoiler is the text that gets displayed right of the arrow and above the hidden part).

::: spoiler
Attempt 1
:::

Just one spoiler in the first line and it works. Two and the whole rest of the post becomes a hidden spoiler.

4. Code Block & Single Line Code: GUI button vs keyboard key

I see I have to be careful using the "backtick" key, as on my keyboard (Spanish - Latin America) it's normally a "dead key" that usually waits for a subsequent letter to put a grave accent over it, like the è in caffè .

I have to press the Space key after the backtick key so that the backtick doesn't just disappear.

<Alt Gr>+<>, then = ``

+<>, then <Space> =

+, then = backtick

5. Showing a backtick in a PieFed post

As can be seen above, I can't find a way to show the typing sequence to get a backtick (had to resort to a third attempt typing out its name in letters: "backtick").

  • With code formatting, it goes wrong: the text before first backtick is displayed as pink monospaced code, but the first backtick is not displayed, the rest is normal body text and there are two backticks at the end instead of just one.

  • Without code formatting, it goes wrong in a different way: everything after the first backtick is pink monospaced code, no backticks displayed at all anywhere.

6. Spoiler 2 with image

Spoiler
SPOILER 2 with linked image

OK, so I can include a linked (third-party host) image in a spoiler. :)

I guess I can't do an upload-right-there-in-PieFed image inside a spoiler, as PieFed doesn't (at least, for now) let you upload any image other than one that's the basis of an image post.

Hi, I'm the mod of /c/Peru. I'm trying to add Spanish and Quechua to the list of languages supported by the community. However when I go to settings I can't find a way to add languages to it. Any idea on how one might do that?

Thanks in advance

Not sure of the right words for what I mean. I'm still new to the Fediverse and even newer to PieFed.

I'm now 99% of the time in PieFed (my instance: piefed.social ) as opposed to Lemmy. Often I'll visit a community and see zero or almost zero posts. But if I open the same community in Lemmy (my instance: lemmy.ca) there are loads of posts.

An example I just noticed: [email protected]

  • Piefed.social: 2 posts.
  • Lemmy.ca: 141 posts.
  1. Is there a way to get those missing posts into Piefed?

  2. All of them at once (not just one at a time)?

  3. Can an ordinary user like me do it?

Thanks.

New notification style issues (media.piefed.social)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

The notification page layout has changed and there are some issues for me.

Possible factors on my end:

  • Browser: Zen Browser 1.13.2b, mod of Firefox 139.0.4.
  • Piefed settings: increased font size, but the Settings page doesn't show me the current size setting so I can't say what it is.

The previous "All" notification screen was clear, compact, had the same height for each notification and only took one click to open anything.

Now the notification heights are variable, some truly huge (as it includes the whole comment being replied to, even the markdown for the URLs of images), replies to comments require an additional click to access, and the "Reply details" line overlaps the notification title. (At least for me, not sure if it's like that for everyone.) EDIT: Also, the nice, immediate indicator of a red dot for an unread notification is now hidden for replies to comments, until clicking "Reply details". ANOTHER EDIT: I just spent a minute hunting down one remaining unread notification, clicking on multiple "Reply details" until I found the right one.

While some of the changes look useful (e.g. distinction between replies to comments and new posts in 'Notify me' communities), they get lost among the confusion created by these issues.

Is there a way to make things a bit tidier and easier to scan, with fewer clicks needed to get to things? (I looked in Settings but didn't notice anything that might make a difference.)

When using the 'migrate tool,' I don't seem to be seeing a 'closing message' as I'd hoped, but maybe the form isn't set up to give me one? Eh, whatever. So then, here's an extra confirmation attempt to make it clear that I'm asking PF to migrate my classic Lemm.ee community over to PF, as follows:

https://lemm.ee/c/eurographicnovels
wants to turn in to:
https://piefed.social/c/eurographicnovels

With the specific request post being here:
https://lemm.ee/post/67797135

Thanks for any and all help getting it sorted, <3
Johnny

Part of the interface has moved from the right side to the very bottom, and the default font has changed to this fancy font. Any idea what it is and what caused it?

17

Recent versions of Lemmy have the ability to set a custom thumbnail for a post:

thumbnail

Is this possible with PieFed? This is especially helpful when some sites fail to get a thumbnail (e.g. YT videos is a common one).

Hey all! I recently had some reports on my community [email protected] that didn't come through on this account. It only came through on my lemmy world one despite me being mod on each account. Any ideas why?

It's the same with[email protected] I only get the notifications on this account not my others

I don't post often either main posts or comments, but I just noticed that the current default posting language is the first enabled language in the Content Language Preference setting.

I can't recall whether this has actually been this way or not. I recall there was a bug that posting language was default to Portuguese a while ago. Is this another bug like that?

If not, I'd like to set my posting language.

TIA.

Is it possible to block a whole instance?

I'd like to block lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml because of the admin's shady suppression of anyone who disagrees with their distorted perspective.

If you're unaware why you should block lemmy, check out [email protected]

And if so, how?

I made this post https://piefed.social/post/931182

But when I browse Lemmy, I can't see it. aka. it's missing on https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

Is it a ID10T User error? or is something else happening

Hey all! Weve just moved our comm from [email protected] to [email protected] How long will it take for posts to go over? Right now almost nothing is showing and it's been about 12 hours

The copy feed option doesn't seem to work. I can however create a new feed, just not copy an existing one.

25

Do I need to use a third-party service to host an image before posting an image into a comment?

As far as I remember, it was straight forward in Lemmy/Mbin
