Brawls and Plunderstorm show that many devs and players enjoy a bit of whimsy with their murder, so I've been thinking about new PvP modes that would truly differ from what we've seen.
Despite all the different maps, objectives, and modes, PvP is stuck on the same primary goal: Kill the opponent. But there are many other forms of competition. In games like tag, hide and seek, and keep away, each side has opposing goals. In tag, being "It" (the chaser) is the undesirable role for most players, and running away is often considered the fun part. A WoW version of tag could have many forms, but these would require a Plunderstorm style setup without classes.
- Battle Tag: 1v1 duels in obstacle course arenas. Hardcore Parkour!
- Plaguestorm: The map is a small town. One player is randomly selected at the start to be infected, and only that player knows it. When they turn into a Scourge, they become invulnerable to damage but can be CCd. The goal is to survive as long as possible or for zombies to catch and infect as many players as possible, and scores are based on how long you survived and the infect-counts of zombies.
- The Gnome and the Orc: This is a fox hunt. The gnomes (foxes) have a selection of movement and defensive abilities, but cannot attack. The orcs (hunters) have a selection of attacks, no movement abilities, but they can ride mounts. The goals and win conditions are self-explanatory. This could also be pirate themed and make it thieves vs guards where some people steal plunder and run while guards defend.
Revenge of the Gods
(Not tag) There's not enough chaos in brawls. I don't mean players making odd decisions or big, intense fights; I mean actual chaos, randomness, and luck. This idea could be applied to any map or team type, but I'll keep the example simple. Players are in an arena like Trial of the Crusader, and the stands are filled with bosses throughout the game. During the battle, they take turns casting effects on players at random. For example:
Lich King: Resurrects dead players temporarily as a 3rd Scourge faction until their next death.
N'Zoth: Selects two players on opposing teams and permanently swaps their team allegiance.
Cho'Gall: We all know two heads are more than one, and they are ready to bring glorious annihilation! Through the power of teamwork, they target one player, but they don't agree on the goal. One head thinks they should crush the puny thing and casts powerful debuffs, and the other thinks they should use the puny thing as a tool to first crush the other puny things and casts powerful buffs.
Mekgineer Thermaplugg: Explosions! MORE explosions! I got to have more explosions! All players detonate upon death, harming friends and foes alike in the blast radius.
Mr. Bigglesworth: When playing roulette, the green tiles signify an important lesson: The house always wins. You will not escape your fate... When the last living creature of Naxxramus appears, all players immediately die.
