No, no this is good. I think Microsoft at least would have the decency to let people use third party clients. Even if ends up not being the case it can't be worse then it is now.

what makes you say that? It would benefit them to keep it all to this client because they can implement whatever tracking they want and you wouldn't have any choice. Most microsoft products don't have apis for 3rd party apps that I know of. I would love to see it but I don't think it's going to happen.
