Mastodon/Pleroma looks to be for broadcast, what would be the best options for sharing content with friends/groups - I'm assuming without knowing better Diaspora or Frendica?

If you want to self-host or have it hosted for you then have a look at Hometown https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki which allows Local only posts. The developer Darius has ~~written articles before~~ shared in an interview on how he is running a friends only Hometown instance.

GoToSocial also supports local-only posting. And it is much, much lighter-weight to run than a full-blown Mastodon instance.
