Many cities started installing posts every 1km along the trails on which are found compostable poopy bags. The user takes one, picks up after his dog then puts the bag back on a hook on said metal post. Then, a city worker comes by a couple times every week and picks them up. The amount of thrown or "forgotten" bags I've seen is drastically lower since then. I have yet to hike in Fredericton but from what I've read in the article, there is no such solution. Someone from the area can correct me, though.
That sounds like a nice option, but we have similar here (dog poop bags are provided, multiple places to throw them out, etc.) but people don't seem to care! It's really too much of a problem to continue to allow dogs on these trails.
And another horrible habit people just don't seem to care about is letting their dog piss right at the entrance to these trails, so you're greeted by the smell of dog piss for the first 100m of the trail. It's not right to allow this to continue anywhere.
Dog park? No problem. But hiking/cycling/walking trails? Keep your dog at home.
Sounds like we should ban everyone, you included.
Fwiw, I do community cleanups, so I'm not the problem.
And I guarantee the same people who are leaving dog shit bags on trails are the same people leaving other litter on trails, too.
I'm totally fine with banning those people from these places. Just make sure we fine them, too. 👌
