I don't understand the chain of events. Did they break in and get caught in the act when folks arrived to open the place or did they wait for the Synagogue to open and then slip in unnoticed?

That synagogue is well known for having scholars there all night debating the Torah. Yumi of Yumi"s dips called the fire department.
