Ok good news, the phone lines aren't fucked. It took about 40 mins and 2 restarts, but the NCD stopped clicking and flashing and turned solid and I've been able to setup the wifi. Can't be arsed setting up the other mesh node yet, so that's a problem for later, but oh well - good enough
Did a download rest and I'm getting about 109 down and 18 up. I pay for 100 down and 20 up (though apparently for an extra fiver a month I can get 40 up). I'll be honest, I'm mega bummed about not being eligible for the free FTTP upgrade, but I'm trying to remember that the last place only had 50mbps, and I had no say in it. At least here I have double download speeds and can get double upload speeds if I decide it's worth it
E: I ended up doing some more research and apparently I'm not even eligible for a paid upgrade. Even if there was a strata that paid for the upgrade, I'd be excluded. My neighbours on either side wouldn't be. That's an r/FuckYouInParticular moment if I've ever seen one... Apparently to make it even better, they're both eligible for free upgrades, while I don't even get that - when they do get around to putting my address up, I'd have to pay. Cheers for that
Copper technologies in general are not fit for purpose.
FTTC boxes are also more sensitive to lightning strikes.
I have heard that. I've also heard that sometimes after power outages the actual DPU pit doesn't come back online how it's meant to, and can require an NBN technician to come out and look into it
Since the DPUs are reverse powered, I wonder if you plugged your NCD into a UPS if that means you'd still have internet and phone lines during a power outage? We had a brief power outage at my last place a few weeks ago, and it was a couple blocks away (listed as "animal damage") We only lost power for about 5 seconds before I guess another nearby grid picked out house back up. It seems our nearest HFC exchange or pit or whatever they use was right near the power pole that was damaged was, so our internet was dead until morning when Jemena finally got someone round to fix it
It should work just fine, provided that at the NBN side, the few bits that need power still has power or their batteries are still good.
Got the fttp upgrade from fttn. Whilst definitely better it certainly wasn’t the silver bullet I was hoping for. I still don’t get what I’m paying for but it’s well within spec according to NBN
Might I ask what speeds you pay for/get? Gigabit would be ideal and is probably what I'd stretch to if the budget allowed, but I'd be happy with 800 down
Paying for 100 down, currently getting… well shit I’ll stop complaining, 108. That’s a lot better than the test when I first got it, was struggling to hit 90
Oh okay, were basically on the same plan then, just you're on FTTP while I'm on FTTC
Wanna trade places? I'll take your unused gigabit 😂
Sure. You wanna move out to the ass end of Melbourne? We’re so far out Melbourne weather isn’t necessarily our weather.
Depends, North, East, South, or West? I'd take South/SE/SW. North I'd take with reluctance. East generally I probably wouldn't because I'm a westie through and through
