Unfortunately, you're correct. The time for courts was 1865. They didn't do what they needed to do then, so here we are today. This was always the trajectory.

The end of the civil war. Essentially, the consequences for treason and the reconstruction era were a complete failure, allowing the rot to spread and fester.
