For the same reason we left Reddit, I was ready to leave the tankies on Lemmy. I believe in PieFed's future (even though I have a Lemmy fall-back account for when PieFed is still broken in certain ways - it has a lot to grow still, though it's awesome to see it happening so quickly!:-).
I would say that PieFed is mostly usable already - perhaps 70-80%, due to the UI/UX. This is in large measure offset by how many of its features are even ahead of Lemmy.
Is it really that peaceful from tankies on piefed? It's not lemmy that's for sure, but with federation you'd still see a lot of them?
If so i'm ready to move, lmao
In several very real ways, yes.:-)
I have blocked all users from lemmy.ml - only the Connect and Sync apps allow such a thing on Lemmy, otherwise the pathetic "instance block" (really a community muting) feature only promises to do such but then fails to deliver.
So on the same post that users of Lemmy see, all comment replies from those users are gone for me! It's really notable too bc usually those from the big 3 offer the most batshit insane comments I've seen anywhere on Lemmy. Presumably that's a side effect of the echo chambers they have gotten used to, before coming out here and using the same style.
Also their authoritarianism is baked right into the code and visible everywhere once you start looking. Like there's a modlog but no modmail, and (edit: within that modlog) the person who removed something is called simply "mod", which many people myself included feel is very Reddit-esque (edit: the only way to converse with someone about a removal reason being a DM, yet you aren't even given the name of who you are supposed to ask? Also the entire post is just yanked away, even killing conversations between people that had nothing much to do with the OP any longer, it's all just poof, gone, and doesn't even say "content removed" but rather says it like it's a site error and to please come back and try again!?). On Lemmy, mods "own" the experience - everyone sees what they choose for them to see - and then admins even more so above that.
Oh PieFed, the end user owns a much greater share of their experience, and via a variety of things - automated filters, collapsing or hiding comments, and icons to help remind and therefore guide but crucially not control the end user - provides a democratization of moderation work. e.g., while I personally have this feature turned off, if I wanted I could have all comments with let's say a net -20 voting score be removed from my sight, thereby allowing others around me (but NOT just a mod or admin) control what shows up for me. Exactly like a spam filter! But, I don't like that, so I turned it off - it's my choice! Whereas if a mod were to remove or lock something, it's not my choice (unless I'm the mod).
Mind you, a lot of the more basic UI/UX features of PieFed are still lacking, like a post preview, but there's more and more added each week, and it's written in Python so easier for people to contribute to.
I'd keep your old account to fall back onto whenever PieFed does not work - the "search" feature is particularly bad right now - but why not create a new on PieFed to check it out? You may even find yourself using it 70-90% of the time as I have, and enjoy it! It really does take some getting used to also, bc the workflow for Lemmy is so limiting to just "All" vs. "Subscribed", yet PieFed offers numerous other options to choose from, so it'll take a bit to get used to it and decide what you want out of it and how best to get it, especially as newer features come along and offer even more options. (Edit: e.g. I have set it up to receive notifications from my favorite communities that offer posts more rarely, so that I don't see them merely in the feed but know about them right away.)
You would be very welcomed here:-).

I think summit MAY allow this as well but not sure if it works. I will be definitely trying it out in a moment to block .ml and maybe some other instances. It has 4 string/regex filters available:
1.) Keywords filters - Available in both posts and comments filter sections.
2.) Instance filters - Same as above.
3.) Community filters - Only in the post section which makes sense.
4.) User filters - In both posts and comments filters sections.
It has 5 toggles for post types too which I find useful:
1.) Link posts.
2.) Image posts.
3.) Video posts.
4.) Text posts.
5.) NSFW posts - Which is independent from the others AFAIK where all types are bundled under it. The other toggles are for SFW posts where you have more flexibility. Or at least that's my understanding as I've started using the app only a few days ago.
While I'm at it and advertising I will also mention that you can create custom feeds with up to 30 communities (it fetches each community using API so the limit is there to not ddos lemmy) to cater your feed further. It has a few other fun features like history of your visited feeds/communities/posts etc. where you can revisit something after you move somewhere else.
I hope features like those will become more widespread because they're so powerful at making your feed better. I have much much muuuuuuuch higher hopes for piefed in that regard because the lemmy devs don't care about making the experience better regardless of whether you're an user or an mod. And even in those rare occasion they implement something they do it in a suboptimal way which is disappointing in it's own way.
Edit: Sadly it seems the filtering of comments only collapses it with text saying that it's filtered instead of hiding it completely.
PieFed being in Python rather than Rust does make it far easier and faster to edit, and more importantly for many other people to contribute edits to. Lemmy devs care a little - at least about improving their own experience, which... makes sense, it's their software after all, which we were using?
And PieFed even has features that Reddit itself lacks, like a NSFL filter that is separate from NSFW. Tbf PieFed has features that are suboptimal, like many times notifications will try to take you somewhere that does not exist, but the difference is that it's still being worked on, rather than forgotten about (I hope, though the API probably is taking a much higher prioritization, and that's fair if that's what people want, even if that's not me:-).
