Trump’s executive order stripped agencies of their independence by making them directly accountable to a part of the presidency: the office of management and budget (OMB). The OMB is led by Russell Vought, founder of the rightwing Center for Renewing America (CRA) thinktank and one of the primary authors of the Project 2025 plan for an authoritarian takeover of government.

It's time for the media to say the quiet part out loud. Stop warning us about things that have already happened and start helping us change it.

you assume the media isn't in favor of this

Who is "the media"? This sounds just as ridiculous to me as when conservatives say it. Reuters? AP? NPR? New Republic? The Atlantic?

Or are you talking only about Fox, OANN, etc?

There's a wide swath of takes in the mainstream, and yes they skew wildly sometimes, but there is categorically no "The Media" monolith conspiring to do anything

The six companies and their stockholders who own the vast majority of those organizations.

You're telling me the sources I mentioned are all owned by the same companies and push the same agenda?

e:

I found this with more info:
https://www.webfx.com/blog/internet/the-6-companies-that-own-almost-all-media-infographic/

not sure of the credibility of the source but it seems correct. I see a lot of television news and entertainment channels split up between several companies.

i'm not saying there's no issues and that these companies don't deserve to be broken up, but railing against "the media" is vague and useless to me

Took the words out of my mouth.

Not all of them. Choose wisely.

The media isn’t independent, it’s all just propaganda now.

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There are independents, they're hanging on for dear life and need our support.

[–] KillerTofu@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What media outlets are independent? I would love to broaden my exposure to non oligarchy owned news.

For starters, under the title link, you'll find The Guardian.

But I also warmly recommend the BBC. They are state-owned, but the UK has kept itself out of their business.

They don’t want to change it. They don’t want to dismantle the tools of fascism. They just want Democrats to wield them.
