The best option for a defensive firearms is a 5.56x45mm AR-15, and a reputable 9x19mm handgun.
Defensive firearms should have a WML, long guns a sling, and handguns require a Kydex or solid plastic holster that fully covers the trigger.
A red dot or etched optic is ideal, but backup irons are important as well! Be sure to check out r/TheArmedGayAgenda

You have pretty much all of the information. Usually if it's a small FFL, I like to call ahead and let them know I'm doing a transfer.
With handguns MI is a little different, as you get a purchase record that has to be given to the local sheriff within 10 days of purchase. I believe some FFLs will do it for you, but worst case is you just drop it off.
It seems you've already decided, but my honest recommendation is that you get something in 9mm with better carry ammo. Size nonwithstanding, 7 rounds is not a whole lot, and 45 just isn't as easy to shoot accurate follow-up shots as 9mm.
While obviously it's a good idea to have a gun that's comfortable to shoot, for a carry gun, it won't matter much if it's so uncomfortable to carry you leave it at home.
I have quite large hands as well (I can manage nearly an octave and a half on a piano), and my carry is a CZ RAMI. While something like my 92S is incredibly comfy to hold and shoot, it'd be a huge pain to conceal carry unless I wanted to do shoulder holsters and a trenchcoat lol.
I'm near Ypsi if you ever want a range partner. I'm decently experienced being an instructor and can always use an excuse for a range trip.
