Is this really a break with democrats though? The democrats have shown time and time again that they're not allies and have repeatedly espoused anti-queer/anti-trans legislation. They've never stood up for us when it's unpopular or politically inconvenient to do so, which is when it really matters.

THIS a million times this. Democrats and liberals in general are not and have never been "allies" to queer and lgbt people, and never will be.
