That’s because nobody is called “tankie” in real life. No one has called me a “tankie” either. The term’s contemporary usage is a creature of social media. It’s a dumb, cringey online meme.

Ask a dozen people what “tankie” means and you’ll get a dozen conflicting answers. It’s a floating signifier for dismissing those to one’s political left. It’s a thought-terminating cliché rhetorical device.
And none of those dozen answers will correspond to how any of them actually use the word
