So basically what's on the monitor isn't even safe anymore. If I were a security researcher in charge of protecting a high profile client I would feel so discouraged right now...

The article doesn't mention Edge one way or the other. The demonstration attack was browser based, but presumably other locally installed malware would be able to use the same side-channel attack as well.
