dump a pile o' bicarb down there, follow it with a giant slosh of vinegar, jam the plugs in and hold them down so it all fizzles downwards then shittons of hot water

Drano is your friend here. Or bicarb with a vinegar chaser and lots & lots of hot hot hot water. The flies have been feeding on detritus down there. I got cutworm larvae coming up through the drain in my shower until I used Drano. For this, nasty chemicals are permitted I reckon.
