The Republicans nominated someone who directly supported an insurrection, and who has proven repeatedly that he has zero ability to build consensus. Are you really arguing that we should be supporting him rather than cheering his failure to get enough votes?
This isn't identity politics. My guess is that some democrats would vote for a Republican centrist in that position, but they aren't going to support someone who's even too far right for a number of Republicans.
