Nextcloud has this really lazy business model. Essentially they launch a skeleton of a feature and then hope the community will do the development for them. There's so many unmaintained features that it's makes the service quite unreliable beyond file sharing.

Actually the opposite often happens (as I think was the case here). Someone from the community develops a prototype app -> people get excited -> Nextcloud GmbH decides to promote it to an official app (but without actually paying someone to work on it) -> community member abandons app.
