Man After Man, by Dougal Dixon. A book on a bleak future for humanity where we survive by modifying ourselves. Both creatures in the illustration had human ancestors.

Kinda sounds like HG Wells the Time Machine with the Eloi and the Morlocks. With apparently the same amount of cannibalism. Weird that that happened twice.
EDIT: Just read the forward of Man After Man - the Time Machine is name dropped and quoted, and this seems to be a sequel of sorts?
