Back in my day, cantrips weren't free.
And the slots didn't scale with the casting stat, so any wizard worth their guano would have more first level spells per day than cantrips
Which you gotta admit it's utter bullshit.
Too bad the cantrips they chose were Prestidigitation, Message, and Dancing Lights
