In France there is currently a criminal case in which the justice department is accusing people of terrorism for using Signal, WhatsApp, VPN and encrypted mails.

Did they? I scanned their Wikipedia article and it seemed like they were primarily under suspicion because they had previously left the country to fight with the YPG.
