It's simple: FDA approved a 8mg version, they ran a study comparing 4mg and 8mg administered by the police (because they are the first responders to crises like this), and the side effects are essentially withdrawal effects like vomiting, but no increase nor decrease in survival.
Now that they have the results, they can readjust the dosage back to 4mg.
Now, imagine if the 8mg variant was more effective? The headline would be "Cops REFUSE to administer naloxone properly following FDA, resulting in UNNECESSARY deaths".
Either ways, police are the bad guys.
I generally agree. I read that CDC trial the other day - what a fantastic study!
Whoever the editor was who agreed to report on that study and title the piece, "You Can Definitely Misuse Naloxone, If You’re a Cop" made an editorially unsound decision - ridiculous, frankly.
I think cops cause many social problems. But this one's on the pharmaceutical industry for pushing more expensive drugs onto police departments that are not only no more effective but cause worse symptoms per the CDC study.
Here's an unbiased view on the trial: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/73/wr/mm7305a4.htm
